Have you found yourself complaining lately? Focusing so much on what you still want to accomplish or achieve that you forget to take delight in what you already have? Maybe you’ve faced a difficult circumstance lately that has resulted in feelings of defeat, sadness, or regret.

Read On!>>>

We’ve all had moments where we’ve found ourselves in an “unhappy” state. And naturally, it’s quite difficult to sit back and smell the roses when you can’t see past the weeds.

It’s amazing how easy it is to find something to complain about, nitpick, or gripe over because there will always be things you want to change. We’re humans, and if you never change, you’ll never grow. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the journey along the way.

I know sometimes you’re too busy to take a moment for yourself. When you have others depending on you and/or wear a million hats, it’s hard to really enjoy the moment because you’re so consumed with creating the next moment. Life has a way of knocking the wind right out of you and bringing you to your knees, but you don’t have to stay there. No matter how tough the matter may be, you decide how you’ll react, how you’ll recover. And you don’t have to allow anything or anyone keep you from having joy, from feeling happy, or from smiling despite what’s going on.

So here’s a friendly reminder to enjoy nowOnce this moment, this day, this week/month/year/opportunity/occasion is gone, it’s gone forever, so you might as well smile about it. Even if you don’t entirely like your current situation or would change it in a heartbeat if you had the power, you still have something to be grateful for.

Don’t believe me? Take a deep breath. That felt good, right? You, my friend, are breathing. You’re alive. And that means that if nothing else, there is hope. This is not your end.

Don’t get so busy that you look around one day and realize that you’ve missed everything. Enjoy the moment. Enjoy now.

Happier than a camel on Wednesday, tho...

Just touched down in the States! And while I'm currently dranking in all this good Boogie love, I thought I'd post a few pics that didn't make the previous posts.  Also,  HennaSooq and I kinda dropped the ball on the giveaway situation... there were supposed to be many more... and so there shall be :)  I'll be giving away more stuff this week, to include a second year long supply of Red Raj (!!!!),  3 henna gloss bars, 5 handmade shampoo bars and a Basics of Body Art Kit.  Stay tuned!

Oh yes, but today (along with the announcement of the previous winners), I'm giving away some Dead Sea Mud... direct from the Dead Sea!

#MissedASpot

More Pics and Deets!>>>

So after reading all of your comments about the Wailing Wall, I remembered that I forgot to share our pics! We were snapping with 2 different iPhones, a Cannon and a Sony on this trip so things got a bit cray.
We went to the Wailing Wall during our tour of Jerusalem and I said a ton of prayers... for fam, friends, y'all, peace... #errythang

See my face? That was me looking for assistance in getting my prayer slip to stay in the wall so my prayer would go through, lol #LookAtAllThePrayersOnTheGroundTho

We also hit up the Dead Sea!  It's actually a lake and it's below sea level-- at earth's lowest elevation on land! That's a pic of us at the 'sea level' mark right off the highway.  We jumped back in the car and drove for another 15 miles or so and we ended up here--

On camel back... #TourismTho #TannedMuch?

Then, here.  In my mind (which can be warped at times), I envisioned black, bubbling water, lol!  It looked like any old beach but once you stepped in, it was abundantly clear that this ish was different.  The floor was ridiculously slippery, mostly because it was made of the famous mud you use for beautifying and such.  Also, because The Dead Sea is one of the world's saltiest bodies of water, you can't drown... well, maybe I could, and I tried, lol, but you can't help but float (if you relax).  It felt like trying to sink a ball in the tub...  Also, nothing lives here, definitely not fish.

We slathered up...
You have to let it dry before you rinse off, so #WaterToWine while you wait :)

Oh, hey Resa, boo!  She was the bestest host ever.  She let Dr. Daddy drive her car all the way to the Dead Sea and she even got in on some spa action!  That's her little Boogie, Ofry. She's listens in English but responds in Hebrew! #Levels
We let the mud dry and upon rinsing, revealed, plump, smooth, incredibly soft and radiant skin.  So I brought home some in a bag and bought several bags right there on the spot.  One of which, I'm giving away to you!

Dr. Daddy and Resa navigating back to Tel Aviv, through the desert... I was in the back eating cheese curls with Ofry.

We had a whole natural hair meetup situation I forgot to tell you about...  these are two of the beauties from our lunch date! #StillGivingAwayBooksTho

And last but not least, Hillary FANGA, cooked us a Trinidadian meal! Of all of our international travels, we had some of our most racist moments in Israel (too many to count, or recount here).  But spending quality time and breaking bread with #OurPeople (while telling crazy stories about #Folk), works as one hell of a reset button.  Thank you Resa and Hillary for taking us in and showing us your Israel.
  #LastSupper

Later Gators,
Nik

How to Protect Your Hair While Swimming

re-post for the summer!

by Nicole Hollis of Hair Liberty

Swimming is fun and relaxing whether you're doing it for exercise or just to cool off. You don't have to limit your pool time for your hair, but you do have to take some extra precautions. Chlorinated water and constant friction from swimming will take a toll on African American hair. Spend a few minutes before and after swimming to help your hair survive the summer.

Key Tips
  • Rinse your hair with tap water before you get in the pool.
  • Don't wear a swim cap if it pulls too tightly or rips out your hair at the hairline.
  • Always shampoo after you swim, chlorine does not rinse out.

Step 1: Always rinse your hair in the shower before getting in the pool. If your hair is "filled up" with clean tap water it won't be able to absorb as much chlorinated pool water. There's usually a shower right near the pool that you can use to rinse your hair before and after diving in.

Step 2: Apply a thorough coating of a silicone serum to your dripping wet hair. The serum will help protect your hair from the force of the water. Choose an inexpensive serum like John Frieda Frizz-Ease Original Serum, $7.50.

Step 3: (Optional) Put on a swim cap. Many swim caps are so tight that they pull your hair out when you take them on and off. Try a Speedo Silicone Swim Cap, $7.99. If a swim cap causes you to lose hair, don't use it. Just let your strands hang free instead.

Step 4: After you swim, rinse your hair with tap water again. It's best to wear a hat if you plan to stay in the sun after you exit the pool.

Step 5: Always shampoo your hair after you're done swimming for the day. It's important to use a shampoo that gets rid of chlorine and mineral build up. If your regular shampoo contains EDTA or Phytic Acid it will provide thorough enough cleansing. If your regular shampoo doesn't contain EDTA or Phytic Acid, buy UltraSwim Chlorine Removal Shampoo, $15.21 for a pack of 4 ($4.99 each MSRP) for pool days.

Step 6: Continue with your usual shampoo and condition routine. You must take the time to condition your hair every time you shampoo it, even if you swim every day.

Step 7: When you style your hair it would be best to avoid direct or high heat. Try to limit your use of heat to a blow dryer with a diffuser attachment or a bonnet dryer on low.

Are you a swimmer? What's your hair care regimen?

Get the Most Out of Your Protective Style

PICTURED: @BIANCALASHAWN

Even though the weather has warmed up a bit, many women will still choose to do protective hairstyles in order to give their hair a break from frequent manipulation and from the elements. Protective styles are not only for the cold weather, they can also be done in the warmer season to protect the hair from the sun's UV rays, humidity, strong wind, and from the scorching summer heat.

Summer time is also a season when many people will fill up their schedules with outdoor activities and many other festivities. This means that a lot of women will be busier in the summertime than in any other season. And as a result, they might not have enough time to spend styling their hair as often as they’d like to.

Also, if you tend to travel more in the summer time, you'd probably want to keep your hair in a style that will last you throughout the duration of your trip. This way, your hair won't be drastically affected by changes in your new environment and schedule. You might be interested in knowing how to maximize your hairstyle so that you can get the most out of the hair growth and length retention benefits of protective styles...

Here are 10 ways that you can retain as much length as possible from a protective style.

1. Make sure you fully detangle your hair before you go get it done.

This way, you won't have to worry about the stylist combing your hair while it's dry. Detangling your hair prior to installing a protective style helps to speed up the styling process and it reduces excessive breakage which can happen when the hair is manipulated in its dry state.

2. Be patient and gentle when you or your stylist is installing the protective style.

...so that you don’t end up with split ends which can reduce the amount of length that you retain.

3. Remind the stylist to not pull too tightly on your scalp.

Tight hairstyles are not only painful and uncomfortable, they can also be damaging to the hair follicles. This can affect your hair growth potential and result in bald patches around your edges and in different sections of the scalp.

4. Avoid over-manipulation during the time that you have your protective style in.

Frequent styling and restyling can cause frizz, which can shorten the intended length of time that your hair is supposed to be kept in a protective style for.

5. To moisturize your hair, combine water, oil and leave-in conditioner in a spray bottle.

Then, lightly spritz your hair a few times in a week or as needed. Spritzing your hair often with a hair spritz helps to re-hydrate the hair without disturbing or roughening the hairstyle. This allows you to wear the hairstyle for a longer period of time.

6. When going to bed, wear a silk head wrap to help keep your style in place while you sleep.

An ordinary bonnet will still protect the hair, but it won’t hold the hair in place like a scarf would. Silk scarves also help to keep the hair smooth and minimize frizz while you sleep, so you won’t have to do much maintenance in the morning. However, if you’re an active sleeper, it’s best to secure the scarf by wearing a satin bonnet on top of the scarf.

7. To maintain your edges, use a soft toothbrush to gently brush up your baby hair when needed.

8. If you must change the look of your protective style, make sure to rub a few drops of oil on your palms before rubbing your hands in your hair.

Lubricating your palms prior to restyling helps to reduce friction and frizz which can sometimes make the hairstyle to look rough.

9. When it’s time to take down the style, please make sure that you take your time and be very gentle with the process.

Depending on the style, try to use your fingers to take down the style in order to minimize breakage. When detangling, make sure you only detangle small sections of the hair at a time, so that you don’t lose all your new growth to breakage.

10. After taking down your protective style, the next thing you want to do is a thorough deep conditioning treatment.

Many protective styles doesn’t allow for a deep conditioning treatment because it can roughen the hairstyle. So the best way to restore moisture and strength back to the hair is to deep condition it when it’s loose.

What other ways do you maximize your protective style?

Tell me about yourself!
Hi, My name is Tiffany Scott. I’m a single 33 year old fraud specialist originally from Mississippi and currently living in Houston, Texas.  I've been natural for 8 years and counting.

Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper? What was your journey like?
Actually, my transition was a mixture of both. I stopped relaxing my hair and just wore my natural curls, but one day I decided I wanted a fade and shaved it all off.

Had you always embraced your texture?
Yes, embracing my hair texture was the main reason why I became natural. I hated the smell of the relaxer and everything that was involved with getting a perm.

How did family and friends react to your decision to go natural? What was your response to them?
My family and friends didn't have a reaction to me going natural because they love my curly hair. I didn't understand what the big deal was until they went natural and had to do a lot of things to achieve my curls.

Describe your hair (fine or coarse, thin or thick, highly porous, low, etc.)
My hair is very fine, thin and curly. My hair wish is to have very thick hair.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to your hair?
The craziest thing I ever did to my hair was getting my hair dyed blonde.

What’s your biggest hair related regret?
I had this great idea 2 years ago to dye my hair blonde. I went to a popular hair salon and they didn't know what to do with my hair. It took two women to figure out how to dye my hair and they proceeded to straighten, bleach, dye and then put a rinse in my hair. After, all of that my hair still wasn't blonde; it was a mixture of orange, red, and brown and in the words of my friend it felt and looked like clown hair.

What's your current hair routine? How often do you wash, condition, and style? Favorite products! Deets!
I wash my hair with Organix shampoo every 2 weeks and co-wash my hair with Organix conditioner every 3 days. After co-washing my hair I use Garnier Fructis moroccan oil and let my hair air dry. While wearing my curly fro, I spray it once a day with organix coconut oil mist and pull out my curls for a bigger fro. When wearing a protective style, I mix conditioner and water in a spray bottle and wash between the braids, edges, and nape.

What’s your favorite hairstyle? Where do you get hairstyle inspiration?
My favorite hairstyles are protective styles. I've crochet braided every style from Havana twist to faux locs. My hairstyle inspirations come from YouTube; there are so many beautiful and creative women with natural hair.

Who is your curl crush?
Tracee Ellis Ross and Solange Knowles! They both give my curl and fashion life.

How do you maintain your hair at night?
I maintain my hair at night by moisturizing my curls with coconut oil and wearing a bonnet to bed every night.

How do you maintain healthy length?
I maintain a healthy length by wearing protective styles, oiling my scalp, and getting my ends trimmed every 90 days.

What's the best thing about being natural?
The best thing about being natural is the freedom to be carefree. I don't think about what I can't do because I might mess up my hair. I remember running like I was on fire, if I was caught out in the rain with relaxed hair.

Can I Swim with Crochet Braids?

 by Ariane of BlackNaps.org

Being that crochet braids have become a popular protective hairstyling option for many naturals, I am sure some of you are wondering “Can I wear this style for vacation?”. Well, it all depends on the type of hair that you use for your crochet braids.

Read On!>>>
If you went for the trendy twist out look using a marley hair curled with rods and dipped in hot water, your style is most likely going to be destroyed if you try swimming in it. Not to mention it will also be uncomfortable and too heavy.

Never fear, naturalista! All hope is not lost. You can still have the joy of flaunting some awesome crochet braids on your vacay, you just have to go with a different hair type that can handle wear and tear from swimming.

The Freetress Bohemian brand is a better choice if you need a hair that can withstand going in and out of the pool. If your hair texture is not on the wavier side of things, you should do a full crochet braid install rather than leaving some hair out to avoid spending too much time blending your hair texture with the synthetic hair. Remember this is your vacation time! Make things as easy and hassle free as possible, you deserve a breather.

Here is a fellow natural, Everything Curly wearing crochet braids using the Freetress Bohemian.

Are Headwraps Appropriate for the Workplace?

 by Mia via GlobalCouture

Many of us naturals have struggled with the way our hair should be worn in the workplace, but what about head wraps and turbans? Is there an appropriate way to wear them or should they even be allowed in the office at all? I’ll be the first to admit that I was against this whole idea of head wraps in the office, unless it carried a religious meaning. Actually, I wasn’t even really excited, at first, to be writing this article since I had such a strong opinion about it being prohibited.

Read On!>>>
The reason behind my initial opinion was it would just make things a bit more complicated and open the door for other articles of clothing to be considered, cultural or otherwise. If workplaces started permitting head wraps and turbans, would that then mean people could wear hats and beanies too? Hats are for fashion/style (and covering bad hair days) and a lot of people wear turbans and head wraps as a fashionable piece as well, not just for cultural purposes. What about hair bonnets and scarves or dramatic fascinators? Yes, these were all the questions that went through my mind.

I decided that I needed opinions from others though so I could try and keep an objective viewpoint. I posed the question in my group chat and the response was 50/50. Two of my friends were for head wraps/turbans in the office and the other two were against it. The two who were for it pretty much gave the same reasons I did above. They agreed that if it wasn’t a cultural obligation, they should not be allowed. One of the two who were in favor said she feels that black/brown people should get some leeway. She admitted that this was a bias reason but also said that it’s not hurting anyone or stopping/slowing down work production so who cares? My other friend feels that Corporate America disparages any and all things Black, therefor banning head wraps in the office. I was still holding on strong to my opinion at this time and then that same friend sent me a text suggesting I include the fact that in the 1800’s, black and multiracial women were ordered to wear head wraps so that we wouldn’t ‘tempt’ white men. I thought that was an interesting fact and, although I didn’t fully understand it, I was intrigued. My friend being the factual person she is, followed up with an article from Black Girl Long Hair (BGLH). The article, was interesting and very enlightening. I never knew that during those times, there was such a “law” in place, BUT the fact I loved the most was that they wanted us to keep our hair in head wraps because we were getting too much attention with our creative and fabulous hairstyles, but that didn’t stop us! We started tying the wraps in elaborate ways which gained even more attention than our hair and in the end, we were STILL fabulous. Can’t stop us!

This now brings me to my revised opinion on head wraps/turbans in the workplace. Although I still believe this could open up a new can of worms, I am all for it! After reading that article, I think head wraps show a sense of pride and beauty and how resourceful we can be. Being able to wear our natural hair or rock a beautiful wrap is something to be proud of and feel confident in, in and out of the workplace. It’s expressive and keeps the spirit of those beautiful women before us alive.

Wearing these may ruffle some feathers, but who cares! “Well behaved women seldom make history.” – Laurel Thatcher Ulrich

How Does Minoxidil Stimulate Hair Growth and Slow Balding

$
0
0

According to the University of Chicago Medicine, men and women shed an average of 50 to 100 hairs per day, and 90 percent of hair grows continuously. The other 10 percent stays in a "resting phase" for a few months until it sheds. However, some people experience more shed hair, or hair loss, than others. A number of things contribute to hair loss, including aging, hormones, stress, and illness. Other lesser known reasons for hair loss include excessive vitamin A intake and pattern baldness caused by hats, headbands, or eyeglasses. It is typically more prevalent along the hairline, or vertex, of the scalp.

Thankfully there are number of hair loss treatments available in the hair care or vitamin section of most grocery and wellness stores. Next time, take a look at the main ingredient on the box of each
product and you might notice one word that they all have in common: Minoxidil.

Read On!>>>

Understanding the real of baldness

Ryan Doss for Livestrong tells us how pattern baldness occurs--first, testosterone is converted into dihydrotestosterone or, DHT. Then, "it has the ability to bind to special receptors on hair follicles. Individuals with a genetic predisposition to male pattern baldness have similar receptors on the hair follicles in their scalp that, instead of promoting hair growth when bound by DHT, actually thin hair and cause hair loss."

How does Minoxidil work?

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) says "Minoxidil is used to stimulate hair growth and to slow balding." It prolongs the growth phase of hair follicles by widening them and prolonging the anagen stage of hair growth. This increases the density of the affected person's hair. The exact cause of how Minoxidil works on a physiological basis is still unknown but since being FDA-approved in 1988, this drug has been proven to show exceptional results in slowing hair loss.

Quantity and application

Originally intended as a blood pressure solution, Minoxidil topical now comes in pure form as a liquid with either an extender spray, dropper, or rub-on applicator for easy application to the scalp. Walgreens has a 2% women's Minoxidil topical solution in a 3-month supply. For men, Rogaine offers a 5% 3-month supply in the form of a foam. These companies usually advise to not exceed usage twice daily. It is important to know that overusing this drug will not produce faster results.
Note: Ask your doctor before using topical Minoxidil. It is not to be confused with oral Minoxidil. This advice is not intended to be replaced with that of a licensed professional.

Do Mild Cleansers Get Your Natural Hair Clean?

Are baking soda and Apple Cider Vinegar really the best for cleansing your natural hair? Find out below!

Read On!>>>

Are you familiar with “The Natural Haven” blog? The name sounds like it’s about natural products but it’s really about the the science of natural hair, in other words hair that hasn’t been chemically processed. It’s written by a scientist who goes by the name of “JC” and she posted a very interesting piece on evaluating different types of mild cleansers.

She did an experiment where she collected her own shed hair which she divided into several groups: a negative control group that was left dirty and oily. A positive control that was washed with regular shampoo, and several test groups which she washed with different types of cleansers. then, and here’s the cool part, she took micrographs of group to determine how well the test products cleaned.

Here’s what she found:
  • Best cleansers (all of the oil removal): Shampoo, Oat water (oats boiled in water to release natural saponins), natural soap bar.
  • Good cleanser (most of the oil removed): Hair conditioner (cowash), liquid castle soap, Clay
  • Poor cleanser (little to no oil removal): Baking soda, Shikaki (crushed acacia pods) and the worst of all Apple Cider Vinegar.
The reason I mention this story is that It’s refreshing to see someone look for evidence rather than just say “ baking soda and ACV are best for cleansing your hair.” So kudos to you JC of The Natural Haven! The Beauty Brains salute you!

Are Sisterlocks For You?

$
0

The Sisterlocks movement has been in the pipeline for more than 30 years and became a trademark company in 1993 by Dr. Joanne Cornwell. Although women who utilize this method do wear amazing hairstyles that embody beauty as we know it, Sisterlocks touts, “Sisterlocks is not about a hairstyle, it’s about a lifestyle.” Founded at a time when government regulation strictly prohibited women of African or African American descent to practice the cultural art of braiding and locking without registered training under the state. After intense effort, Sisterlocks won their case against the state of California allowing “anyone legitimately practicing Sisterlocks according to the standards our company has set forth, is exempt from the current cosmetology law in California.”

Read On!>>>

Having a patented technique, Sisterlocks does not follow the traditional methods of locking that most have heard of which includes locking with a two-strand twist or a palm roll. The precision technique requires hands-on training directly from the company and they have done a marvelous job holding onto the integrity of the company.

This precision technique requires a unique Sisterlocking Tool to firmly style the locks flawlessly. When done correctly, the wearer can style the hair just as they would loose hair or even braids or micro braids. However like anything worth doing, it requires commitment for lasting results. To preserve the prestige it deserves, I sought out professional Sisterlock loctician Elaine Hill from Dallas, Texas on how to install and maintain Sisterlocks.

Installation
It is essential that you see a certified Sisterlock TM Consultant for the classic technique. A consultant will first schedule a consultation with you to determine how to proceed with your locks. Most everyone with a bit of texture is a great candidate for the method. However if you have straight hair, you would not be a candidate as a curl in the hair is necessary for the technique to work effectively. Also, if your hair is extremely weak, damaged or thinning and sparse hair, this may not be the best choice for you. Your consultation will also determine how long does it take to install and the cost.

Maintenance
According to Hill, “Maintenance is tightening as the hair grows out every 6 to 10 weeks. The wearer can do this process. However, it is recommended that the client should wait at least 6 months after the install to begin maintaining on their own and take the re-tightening class offered by Sisterlocks.”

Is this for you?
There are pros and cons to every hair procedure and doing your research will help you make the best decision for your hair. Consider some of the pros and cons to this technique and your lifestyle. Does it fit the goals you have for your hair? Hill brings up a few things to consider, "Pros are the versatility of it and the lifestyle change is definitely a plus. I can't think of any cons, because you can flat iron the hair, use a curling irons, roller set, color, braid the hair, or wear it loose. Your hair always looks good!”

Removing All Obstacles That Keep You From Yourself

"Certain springs are tapped only when we are alone. The artist knows he must be alone to create; the writer, to work out his thoughts; the musician to compose; the saint, to pray. But women need solitude in order to find again the true essence of themselves.” - Anne Morrow Lindbergh
I used to talk on the phone a lot.

It was an escape for me to hop on the phone with my girlfriends and chatter away the stress of the day. It was comforting and familiar, but it ate up a lot of time that I could have used to process what was going on in my life.

Read On!>>>

I felt like I had to consult with other people before I could make decisions on my own. I thought I had to please everyone before I could even consider pleasing myself.

Eventually, I became so overwhelmed with life and people and noise and opinions and expectations that I began to shut it all out. I became very selective and particular about when and how I shared myself. It happened gradually and some friends and family didn't understand.

Over time, I realized that I would have to sacrifice some things to become the driven person I had inside of me. I had to put my needs first, and at first I felt conflicted and guilty about it.

Despite my guilt, my decision to preserve myself for my creative thinking process changed my life.

I became less cranky and anxious, I felt more mindful and present as a mom, partner, and friend. And when it comes to purpose, I became constantly inspired. I went from sitting on the phone complaining and distracting myself, to giving myself time for self-reflection and to expose myself to more of my feel-good indulgences like reading, music and art.

The fear of disapproval from others deters many of us from carving out the space we need to be alone and enjoy our own company. We don’t want to hear the criticism and the guilt trips. I didn’t want to hear it either, but if I hadn’t made this shift, I would probably be on medication right now for anxiety and depression.

I couldn’t live that way anymore, constantly at the mercy of everyone else's intentions and over-involving myself in too many things. I felt myself pulling away from it all but at first I worried about not being every woman and not being able to take care of everyone all the time.

Women often struggle with this “Superwoman Syndrome.”

We want to nurture and be responsive and present in our relationships, but in doing so with no boundaries, we neglect our need to self-focus and nourish our own spirits. This leads to burn out, lack of inspiration and it hurts our relationships in the long run. We can’t be fully present in the lives of our loved ones if we are not first fully present with ourselves.

A key element of living a purposeful life is respecting yourself enough to set boundaries and make changes to your lifestyle as needed. When life gets busy and outside pressures close in, you need a strong but loving voice that you’re not afraid to use to protect your peace of mind. By making soul-centered personal choices—adding what you need and subtracting what you don’t—you are valuing yourself and creating a meaningful life.

Finding purpose in life and the unique way that you experience it can be as simple as removing the obstacles that are keeping you from yourself.

It’s not about cutting everyone off, it’s about carving out more time and space for yourself. I won’t sugar-coat it—everyone won’t understand and feelings might get hurt. But you have to let go of the need for approval, claim your independence and honor your needs.

Amino acids are completely natural micronutrients, which have significant benefits such as supporting hair growth. They are your body's protein building blocks.
According to the doctors at AminoAcidStudies.org, "Amino acids are completely natural micronutrients, which have very significant benefits such as supporting hair growth, maintaining cartilage in joints (treating arthritis), improving circulation, immunity, and others..."

Studies have shown that amino acids through supplements and topical beauty products can lead to an even complexion, improve the appearance--wrinkles, fine lines, sun spots, stretch marks, and more.

There are 4 major amino acids for skin care:

  1. Proline
  2. Glycine
  3. Leucine
  4. Lysine
Together, they work together to provide antioxidant powers to strengthen the skin and also act as an exfoliant to boost moisture retention on the newer layer of skin underneath your Epidermis (the outer layer). Your other layers Subcutaneous, and Dermis equally benefit from amino acids for protecting them from potentially harmful environmental factors. Because of this, amino acids are used in various anti-aging products. Love to Know says they might trump the popular 'alpha hydroxy system' in effectiveness when it comes to smoothing skin and improving an even tone. Right now, there are 2 trending amino acid treatments: AFA (Acid Filaggrin Antioxidants) and Amino Genesis.

The skin conditions that see improvement from products with high amino acid content:

  • Rosacea
  • Psoriasis
  • Chronic Dermatitis

Your body needs them

Amino acids can be incorporated into your diet to reap the benefits of them, as well. Leafy greens, fish, nuts, beans, and soy are all rich in the above amino acids, which have been proven to improve your immune system, ease the pain of those with Fibromyalgia, and even your body's natural sleep pattern. According to a study by University of Arizona's biochemistry department, your body produces 10 out of 20 amino acids. The other 10 must be supplied by food.

We produce these 10 amino acids:

  1. Alanine
  2. Asparagine
  3. Aspartic acid
  4. Cysteine
  5. Glutamic acid
  6. Glutamine
  7. Glycine
  8. Proline
  9. Serine
  10. Tyrosine
We need food for these amino acids:
  1. Arginine
  2. Histidine
  3. Isoleucine
  4. Leucine
  5. Lysine
  6. Methionine
  7. Phenylalanine
  8. Threonine
  9. Tryptophan
  10. Valine

Your hair needs them

Amino acids are your building blocks of protein. The 3 layers of your skin, cuticle, cortex, and medulla, need amino acids for a number of things. L-lysine positively affects the synthesis of collagen in hair, which improves elasticity--this means bouncier curls for you. It also reduces daily hair loss and thinning--specifically, androgenic alopecia.

The following dietary and supplemental amino acid treatment serums can be found in your local natural grocery store:

Fell Off?- Get Your Natural Hair Back on Track!

Before I even begin to get into the topic, I want to start off by saying do not stress, it is not the end of the world!

So you have found yourself a routine that not only works for your hair but fits into your lifestyle (time), you use products that give you results (and works with your budget) and you are happy with your hair journey. All of a sudden you realize something is up. You’ve skipped a few (needed) moisturizing deep condition sessions, you haven’t been detangling properly/thoroughly or perhaps you started noticing excess shedding because you’ve become a little complacent with the protein deep conditions. Like I said, do not stress, that will not help, if anything, it could cause even more of a setback. It happens to the best of us, life sometimes gets in the way, we fall ill, we become busy, etc.

Here are 5 really simple steps that will hopefully pave the way to getting back on track:

Read On!>>>

 1. Don’t beat yourself up–As mentioned, it can actually cause setbacks (stress can result in more shedding!) so forgive yourself, move on and aim to get back on the wagon!

2. Set aside time– Give yourself 30 minutes – 1 hour (perhaps on the weekend) and go over your routine to remind yourself about things you might have forgotten. If you have a hair journal (you should) read what you’ve written previously to remind yourself and prepare.

3.  Evaluate why you “fell off” (e.g. reasons within your control/beyond your control) and find out if they can be avoided next time (applies for reasons within your control).

4. Set an alarm/reminder – If you know your hair is “thirsty” and you need to start with a moisturizing deep condition, put a reminder/alarm on your phone/iPad/calendar etc. with a time and date.

5. Make room for “me time” – We all have busy schedules, families, obligations etc. however, that does not mean you can’t take time for yourself. Try get a family member or friend to help out during your “me time” so that you can get back on track without guilt or stress.

6. Try to make it fun again - Maybe your routine started to become a drag and because of that you became complacent. Make your wash day a spa day as well! Give yourself a face mask, do a mani-pedi and during your process listen to music or watch a movie. Make it fun again!

There is always a way to rectify the issue, so if you have missed out on a few steps of your routine all is not lost, your hair won’t start falling out. Pick a place to start, I would recommend with a good detangle session and a moisturizing deep condition to pamper your strands. Happy, hydrated hair is always a good place to start. Grab the bull by the horns and get back on that wagon!

How do you get back on the wagon?

Tips for the Perfect Perm Rod Set on 4C Natural Hair

by Kanisha Parks of Blacknaps.org

4c naturals often stray away from certain styles for the fear of frizz or that they won’t turn out right. Always remember that you can (and should) try any style you want! Perm rods are a great, heatless way to achieve beautiful, bouncy curls. This was Dephne Madyara‘s first time trying this style, and the curls came out soft, shiny, and super defined. Here are a few tips to ensure perm rod perfection:

Read On!>>>

1. Start on hair that has already been properly detangled and stretched to achieve better elongation.
2. Keep the hair taut as you install the perm rod in order to prevent frizz during takedown.

3. Don’t get too heavy handed with the products if you don’t want your hair to take forever and a day to dry.
4. Do not over-separate the hair in order to prolong the style.

How do you achieve flawless perm rod sets? Weigh in!

Tell me a little about yourself and your hair journey.
My name is Courtneye Drake, but I go by Court. I’m 22 years old. I was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland.

How long have you been natural? Have you always embraced your curls?
This year will make five years that I have been natural! Unfortunately, I haven’t always embraced my curls, but now I love them so much and rock them shamelessly, everyday.

Read On!>>>

What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why?
I didn’t even plan to go natural. I didn’t even know that my hair was curly. I’d been getting perms since I was about 4 years old. I’d always assumed that my hair was too unmanageable and that I needed perms. That ended when I got a perm for senior prom. My scalp was not based so the perm ended up burning my scalp to the point where I had painful sores everywhere. After that day, I never got a perm again. My sister told me that my hair would get just as straight as I liked without any chemicals, so I found myself transitioning. I was too much of a punk to cut all my hair off so I just wore a bun for about a year and a half until my hair grew out. I cut my hair to shoulder length and slowly removed the remaining permed ends as time went on. If I could go back I would definitely big chop though!

How would you describe your hair?
My hair is thick and it has a mind of its own! Some days we’re the best of friends and other days we are each other’s worst enemy, but I wouldn’t trade her for the world. I have a few different textures. I’ve noticed that the left side of my hair looks and acts so much differently than the right side. It can be annoying at times, but I’ve learned to embrace it.

What do you love most about your hair?
I love the length and how big it gets!

What has been the most memorable part of your journey?Has it been easy or difficult or both?!
My journey has been both difficult and easy. There have been moments when I have looked at my hair in complete awe and then there have been moments where I have cried and wanted to rip every single strand of hair out of my head! Detangling isn’t always fun, styling can be too time consuming, and searching for the right products for each season has been quite frustrating. Even through all of that, thank God for YouTube and natural hair blogs. I can honestly say that without the help of other wonder naturalistas, I would probably be rocking a bald head right now.

What are (or were) some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles or current dos’?
When I transitioned, I wore my hair in a bun on top of my head every single day. Although it was boring, it was cute and manageable so I have no regrets. Today, my go to hairstyles are a wash and go and my topknot.

What have your experiences been as a ‘natural’? Any memorable reactions from family or others?
My experiences as a natural weren’t always full of sunshine and daisies. My reactions from family, friends, and even complete strangers were both positive and negative. I’ve been told my hair was beautiful. I’ve gotten numerous compliments, but I’ve also gotten countless amounts of funny looks. I’ve even been made fun of and told that I needed to straighten my hair. Others have said that it was “too much”. I’m so sensitive; sometimes people’s negativity got to me and made me feel bad about my hair, but I quickly got over that! Now I could give a crap about what people think about my curls. I love them and that’s all that matters.

What is your hair regimen?
I wash my hair once a week using Shea Moisture Curl & Shine shampoo. I clarify once a month with Kinky Curly Come Clean. I deep condition with Alikay Naturals Honey and Sage Deep Conditioner. My favorite leave-in is Kinky Curly Knot Today. My stylers of choice are Camille Rose Naturals Moisture Milk and Curl Maker. I do not cowash anymore.

What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs?
I love Naturalneiicey, Taren Guy, MahoganyCurls, HeyFranHey and so many more! I can list them for days.

Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words?
If you are considering going natural please do it! If you are already transitioning or natural, keep pushing and never look back. This journey is so rewarding. Your hair is uniquely yours and it should be embraced!
