The Pros & Cons of Using VapoRub to Grow Hair

$

By Winnie Gaturu

VapoRub is a common item in every household. It is a mentholated ointment that's used to suppress coughs and reduce pains in joints and muscles. However, people seem to use it for far more than that. As a matter of fact, some women are using it to stimulate hair growth and regrow thinning edges. So, Why Is Vicks VapoRub Being Used?

Continue
According to Essence magazine, an Atlanta-based Youtuber, Just Jocq, posted about the benefits of Vicks in March 2016. After that, the trend started spreading widely with many women trying it out to see whether it works. The Vicks VapoRub ingredients that stimulate hair growth are camphor, lavender, eucalyptus and menthol.

Lavender – Serves as a great treatment for hair loss and improves blood circulation around the hair follicles.

Camphor – Improves blood circulation in the hair follicles which in turn boosts the growth of strong healthy hair.

Eucalyptus – Soothes an itchy scalp, prevents dandruff and stimulates hair follicles. Eucalyptus also improves hair elasticity and keeps it strong.

Menthol – Gets rid of irritants thus giving room for hair to grow easily.

Pros
Since Vicks VapoRub is also affordable and easily available, it is no wonder that women with both natural and relaxed have embraced it for hair growth. Some apply it directly on their scalp and massage it in while others mix it with another product or oil. Most of the women who've used Vicks VapoRub swear that it works.

Cons
Allergic Reaction
Vicks VapoRub is generally safe for use. However, it does contain ingredients that could cause allergic reactions or irritate the skin. So, if it doesn't react well with you when applied on other areas of your body, you probably shouldn't use it on your scalp.

It Contains Petroleum
Petroleum, one of the ingredients in Vicks VapoRub, creates a thick film on the hair shaft thus preventing moisture from getting out and most importantly from getting in. Because of this, some women prefer to stay away from petroleum-based products on their hair. If you're one of them, you might not fancy using Vicks VapoRub on your hair.

Alternatives
If you’re a bit skeptical about using Vicks VapoRub to grow your hair, you can make your own DIY hair growth product. There are many recipes out there to guide you through the process. Most of these DIY’s use essential oils and might also include herbs and carrier oils. Some of the most effective essential oils for hair growth include rosemary oil, Clary sage oil, peppermint oil and eucalyptus oil. You might need to do a bit of experimenting to find out what works best for you.

What do you think about the use of VapoRub for hair growth?

14 Signs You Need To Get Laid

$

By Julia Austin via Madamenoire

I’m not going to sugar coat this for the single ladies: sex is good for you! Really good for you. It boosts your self image, it sends all sorts of relaxation chemicals through your body, and it’s a nice little reminder that you’re totally desirable. When you haven’t had a play date in the bedroom in a while, your body and brain take a hit! Here are signs you need to get laid and soon.

1) YOUR BED’S A MESS
There is a nice, designated spot where you clearly curl up every night, and around that is scattered candy wrappers, magazines, takeout receipts, your dog(s) or cat(s) and all of their toys.

2) YOU FORGOT WHERE YOU KEEP YOUR CONDOMS
That really big Costco pack you bought forever ago, maybe when you last became single again, yeah—you don’t remember where you put that thing.

3) YOUR UNDERWEAR IS GETTING RAGGEDY
The truly nice underwear is usually delicate and needs to be hand washed. But if you haven’t been bringing anybody home lately, you’ve probably been sticking to the full-butted, period-perfect panties. And since those need to be machine washed, your underwear is getting raggedy and worn out.

4) YOU NEED SCISSORS TO SHAVE
If you’re a shaver instead of a waxer, when it comes time to maintain your va-jay-jay, you need to bring in a pair of scissors before razors can even go near the area! And then you need three razors.

5) YOU DON’T EVEN WANT TO TALK ABOUT SEX
When your girlfriends start dishing about their one-night stands, or even making jokes about how they haven’t had one in a while, you don’t want to talk. You’re too depressed about not being laid, that you don’t even want to talk about being depressed about not being laid. It’s not even funny anymore.

6) YOUR MOM’S CONCERNED
Even your own mother is making hints that a little human contact of the carnal kind would do you good.

7) YOUR FRIENDS STOPPED ASKING
Usually when girlfriends get together. the conversation starts with “How are you? How’s work? Are there anyguys???” But, your friends end it at, “How’s work?” with you. Even they know it will depress you to be asked about men.

8) YOU’VE FORGOTTEN HOW TO DO THINGS…
If you try really, really hard to visualize it, you can’t exactly remember how to handle that very special part of the male anatomy.

9) YOU’VE DONE NAKED EXAMINATIONS
You’ve stood in front of the mirror, sometimes for fifteen minutes, examining every part of your body. This usually ends with the words, “Could be worse.”

10) YOU FORGET TO WEAR A BRA
When you go to the grocery store or run an errand, you forget some of the most basic parts of making yourself look decent, like putting on a bra, taking out your curlers, and putting on some freaking lip gloss! You’ve totally forgotten that meeting a guy is a possibility.

11) ADULT VIDEOS MAKES YOU UNCOMFORTABLE
Or even a sex scene in a movie. You’ve started to turn your face away during sex scenes, like you would if your mom were in the room, but nobody is there…Sex is just such a foreign thing to you now, it makes you uncomfortable to see others having it.

12) YOU’VE GAINED WEIGHT
A relatively active sex life is great motivation to stay in shape. You usually forego large dinners or late night snacks when you know you’ll be active later, plus you can’t keep your giant comfy t-shirt on to cover up those wobbly parts during sex. So if you’ve gained a few lbs. it could be time to get back into lingerie shape.

13) YOU ACTUALLY BELIEVE YOU’RE TOO BUSY
You’ve begun to compare yourself to grand and impressive women that probably don’t have time for sex, like the Queen of England, Hillary Clinton or the females in the Doctors without Borders programs. Here is one little problem: you do have time for sex. Plenty of it.

14) YOU’VE ORDERED EVERYTHING ON NETFLIX

Do any of these signs resonate with you?

Lena Waithe's 'The Chi' Shows the Humanity of Chicago

The Chi Cast
By Mwabi Kaira

Chicago was known for deep dish pizza, the greatness of Michael Jordan as a Bulls player and the once upon a time genius of Kanye West until gun violence took over as its focal point. Some have suggested that the National Guard and The United Nations step in to help gun violence in the city. Two Chicago natives have had enough of hearing about the ills of their beloved hometown and have done something about it.

Emmy award winner Lena Waithe co-wrote the new Showtime series The Chi, and Grammy award-winning rapper Common executive produced it to show a different narrative. Lena got the inspiration for the show after watching yet another news report about gun violence in the city. The Chi follows four working-class families on the South Side of Chicago as they face their highs and lows. Crime constantly threatens to destroy their worlds.

Continue

Lena Waithe
Despite Chicago’s issues Lena knows it as the place that molded her and has fond memories of her childhood. The Chi is not autobiographical for Lena and humanity is at its core. She explains,
“My mission is to show that these young black men are not born with a gun in their hand. These are kids who come out with all the promise and hope that any other kid does. I wanted to humanize them and show that their lives are valid. But I don’t paint us in a perfect light at all. My hope is that I can show us in an honest way. That’s it. Not bad. Not perfect. Just accurate."
Common
Common has been painting Chicago’s diversity in music for decades and knows that seeing it on the screen will have a different impact. He says,
"We need to understand that Black people are human beings who love, cry and get angry and love their families and love God. We get scared to talk to girls at times. To be able to tell a story that is very specific to Chicago and the universal struggle of Black life is important to me."
The Chi’s first episode aired on Sunday night and we were introduced to a working class mother, grieving parents, an aspiring chef, a sneaker-loving teen father and a wide-eyed pre-teen with puppy love on his brain while navigating the mean streets of Chicago. Although The Chi is not the first show based in Chicago, it is one that is closest in hitting the mark about the black experience.

Cast of The Chi
Even though the premiere episode of The Chi aired at the same time as The Golden Globes, 1.68 million viewers tuned in and gave Showtime its best premiere since Billions. The Chi is off to a great start and looks amazingly promising. Tune in to The Chi at 10 PM on Sundays on Showtime.

Is The Chi on your radar?

Why Your Black Hair Appears Brown & What To Do About It

$

By Winnie Gaturu

When I was younger, my hair color was an enviable jet black color. As a matter of fact, people often asked my mother whether she had died my hair black and when she said no, many would still not believe her. However, over the years, I've noticed that my hair appears to be brownish in color. In fact, it seemed like I had brown highlights. To get on the same page, I've never colored my hair but it was relaxed at some point. Currently, I've cut it short but it's usually black in the morning and gets a brownish tinge as the day advances. If you've also noticed the same thing with your hair, here are a few possible reasons why this might be happening.

1. Minerals in Water

Hard water contains minerals and metals such as calcium and sulphur. When you use this kind of water to wash your hair, the minerals stay on top of your hair shaft instead of penetrating inside. This prevents hair from absorbing enough moisture to keep it looking healthy. As a result, the hair might get dull and seem lighter than it actually is. Hard water eventually makes hair brittle which leads to excessive breakage.
Solution:

If you live in an area with hard water, make sure that you use filtered water to wash your hair. This will allow you to clean your hair and allow it to absorb the moisture it needs.

2. Sunlight

Hair has two melanin pigments; eumlanin (dark) and phaeomelanin (light). These two blend together in different proportions to create each person's hair color. The melanin is produced in specialized cells known as melanocytes. These cells are positioned on each hair follicle and release melanin to the growing hair strands. When hair strands get exposed to sunlight, the melanin in them gets bleached. Since hair is made up of dead cells, the affected part remains lighter. Exposure of hair to sunlight makes it lighter. If you have black hair, it might end up looking dull, lighter or brownish due to sun damage.

Solution:

Protect your hair from intense sunlight. You can put on a hat or a head scarf to make sure that the sun's rays aren't directly reaching your hair.

3. Genetics

For some, it's simply genetics. The properties of your hair are genetically coded and that is something you can't change. You might notice a similar hair trend with family members where their hair tends to lighten or change color as they age. This is not a cause for alarm.

Solution:

You can't change anything about your genes, you just have to live with it. Check your hair from time to time to see whether you can find any changes. You might be surprised to see several brownish strands growing naturally from the root.

If your hair appears to be brownish or lighter from time to time, it might be one or a combination of the reasons stated above. But then again, it might be that your hair is naturally lighter, or brownish and you only tend to notice the real color when you're in proper lighting. However, if you're interested in dying your hair to make it darker, natural products will serve you best.  You can use henna or Cassia to dye your hair especially if you have a couple of grey strands. In addition to adding some color,  both strengthen hair and add a glossy shine to it.

How do you deal with your hair when it changes color?

Dani & Dannah

If you haven’t heard of sassy and sweet sisters Dani (7 years old) and Dannah Lockett (6 years old), where you been, Sis?! Since going viral with a video about Dannah’s breakup back in early 2017 (over 10 million views and shares!), these two have been dropping knowledge and sharing their love for Christ all over the web and have even been featured on the Today Show, The Steve Harvey Show, and the Real! This duo may just be getting started but it’s clear they’re here to stay!

Viral video 'after the breakup'

The girls are truly best friends, even calling each other “sister buddies,” and enjoy making videos together. They started posting about 9 months ago and since have been boldly declaring their faith via social media, holding nothing back!

“Well, if you believe in something or someone and love them so much you can’t help but tell the world about it, right!” says big sis, Dani. “We aren’t nervous about comments, and yes, we read many of them, because we know that everyone isn’t going to believe like we do and that’s ok. They didn’t believe Jesus and he was right in front of them.” Currently, attending a Christian academy, the girls say that their friends know about their success and are happy for them.

In addition to their faith, the girls also embrace their beautiful natural hair! Their mom owns and runs Healthy Hair Studio salon in Conyers, GA and says she, Dani and Dannah, and her other two daughters are all natural. The girls share, “We love our hair and we like to wear it out, big and puffy the most! Curly hair is all we know and we tell our mom all the time it’s just fine there’s no need to brush it!”

The girls with mom Danella
Behind the scenes is their momager, Dannella, who is their greatest supporter, fan, and prayer warrior. She discussed with me some of the challenges of running Dani and Dannah’s social media empire and having to deal with negativity, stating:
“I just always remember that if God is for me then who can be against me and that no weapons formed against me shall prosper. God has our backs and that makes this easy. When we first got started it was a little nerve-wracking because I would deal with silly comments but then I realized everyone isn’t going to believe like I do and some people live and breathe negativity. I also realized some people are just ready to judge. Even though they have their own faults, they want to pick apart others and that’s just to make them feel better about themselves. I see this a lot in other Christians—instead of uplifting or praying for each other they are judging and gossiping. I’m not that Christian. I’m not pointing out your flaws and judging you, hoping to cover my own. So I just pray for them and go! God bless them.”She assured me that she is not a stage mom, and that the girls do this because they want to and ask to. “Some days they don’t post and that’s because they don’t want to and that’s ok. Remember when God gives you a gift with an assignment you want to do it every chance you get!”
Dani & Dannah on The Real
Dannella’s hopes for her daughters are that they continue to inspire others and that God’s perfect will be done in their lives. In the future, Dani and Dannah say they would like to work with Oprah and Beyoncé. Check out their cuteness via their social media!

Finding A Way In Trump's America Through MLK's ‘Drum Major Instinct’

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
By Erickka Sy Savané via Essence.com

When it became official that the Electoral College had voted for Donald Trump my stomach dropped. And it's been dropping every day since. Unfortunately, no amount of protest has changed that. But during times like this, it’s the voices of the great leaders who have come before us that speak the loudest. In this case, Dr. Martin Luther King’s sermon, ‘The Drum Major Instinct’ speaks like a light in a dark tunnel.

Continue

Dr. King's 'Drum Major Instinct' sermon

It took place at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Atlanta, 1968. Dr. King began telling a story from the book of St. Mark about James and John and how they asked Jesus if they could sit next to him on the throne. They wanted to be where Jesus was. The other disciples got mad. What had they done to deserve this? Jesus, on the other hand, had a different response.

Dr. King went on to talk about the character trait that would prompt James and John to ask that question of Jesus in the first place. He calls it ‘The Drum Major Instinct,’ and says it’s that innate desire that we all have to lead the parade or be first. Philosophers say it’s the most dominant human impulse. When the instinct goes unharnessed we will put others down so we can be on top.

Dr. King tells a story of being locked up in a Birmingham jail, talking to police officers about race, when the subject of money came up. When the officers revealed how much they were earning Dr. King laughed:
"You ought to be marching with us. You're just as poor as Negroes. You have been put in the position of supporting your oppressors, because through prejudice and blindness, you fail to see that the same forces that oppress Negroes in American society oppress poor white people too. And all you are living on is the satisfaction of your skin being white, and the drum major instinct of thinking that you are somebody big, when you are so poor you can hardly send your children to school.”
Little has changed. Poor whites think it’s the black and brown population taking away jobs and security when it’s really the one percent. Dr. King also warns of what could happen if China, the U.S. and Russia had a standoff. We’d all go within seconds. Even less has changed. Dr. King goes back to Jesus, James and John.

Jesus tells James and John that there’s nothing wrong with wanting to sit next to him on the throne, and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to be first. “But you must earn it,” Jesus says. “True greatness comes not by favoritism, but by fitness." He told them to be first in love, moral excellence, generosity and service. Dr. King finishes with...
If I can help somebody as I pass along,
If I can cheer somebody with a word or song,
If I can show somebody he\'s traveling wrong,
Then my living will not be in vain.
If I can do my duty as a Christian ought,
If I can bring salvation to a world once wrought,
If I can spread the message as the master taught,
Then my living will not be in vain.
And I’m encouraged because we’ve been here before, and together we won.

Do you draw inspiration from any of Dr. Martin Luther King's teachings?

Are The Kings Cashing-in on Dr. King’s Dream?

President Donald J. Trump (C), alongside president for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center Isaac Newton Farris, Jr.(R), Ben Carson (L), Vice President Mike Pence (R), speaks before signing a proclamation to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at the White House.
By Scott Hinds Lambeth

As I’m sure is the case with many of you, I expected 2018 to begin with donald trump remaining true to his 2017 form by doing and saying outlandish things. However, I didn’t imagine that he could be more vile or divisive than he had proven to be last year. After hearing that the 45th President of the United States referred to the entire continent of Africa as shithole countries while simultaneously insulting the entire populations of Haiti and El Salvador, I’m now convinced that trump’s penchant for racism and hatemongering is limitless.

 Continue

In as much as I’m sickened by trump’s virulent sentiments about the people of Africa, Haiti and El Salvador, I’m equally dismayed by the response to his statements by members of one of the most prominent black families in the United States. On January 12, 2018, in a televised interview conducted after he appeared with donald trump at a White House event honoring his uncle, Isaac Newton Farris Jr. (the nephew of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the CEO of the MLK Center for Nonviolent Change) said, “I think that president trump is racially ignorant.”

Now… I’m not really sure what the hell “racially ignorant” means. But my confusion notwithstanding, I can’t imagine how anyone believes that a man like donald trump, having lived in the most diverse city in the world for most of his life, doesn’t understand that it’s the epitome of racism to say that Haitians shouldn’t be allowed to come into the country while at the same time asserting that we need to allow more people from countries like Norway to immigrate to the United States. Racially ignorant? It’s like Isaac Newton Farris Jr. thinks trump is a member of some isolated tribe in the Brazilian Rainforest who hasn’t been exposed to people of other races.

Dr. King niece Alveda King with President Trump
And just when my angst was almost over from one member of the King family providing cover for trump’s ever so obvious racism, lo and behold another member of the family inexplicably does the same thing. Reverend King’s niece, Alveda King (author of the soon to be released book King Rules), went even further in her defense of trump than did her cousin Isaac. During an interview on Fox and Friends, on the very day that we honor the legacy of Dr. King’s lifelong struggle to bring about equality to all oppressed and marginalize people, Ms. King was unequivocal in her assertion that trump isn’t racist.

Everyone, including Mr. Farris and Ms. King, has the right to defend those they believe to be unjustly maligned. But in the case of Dr. King’s niece and nephew, it defies logic and decency that they, of all people, would attempt to defend donald trump’s indefensibly racist behavior. The fact that they’re willing to make excuses for trump is extremely curious. It makes it difficult for the millions of people who’ve been aggrieved by his words and actions not to ask: How does it benefit these members of the King family to defend a man who has proven many times and in many ways that he is profoundly racist?

When looking back at his many racist comments of last year in conjunction with his housing discrimination efforts against people of color in the 70’s, his rallying to bring back the death penalty for the Central Park 5, who were later proven innocent, as well as the disgusting way in which he launched his political career by attempting to delegitimize the Obama Presidency, it seems impossible to me that in good-faith and good-conscience anyone can conclude that donald trump isn’t a racist. That two members of the King family have done just that is extraordinary… Their doing so raises a question that I wish they would answer: How many racist things must one do or say or believe or exalt to qualify as racist?

As one of the United State’s most prominent families, members of the King family are in the unique position of being able to speak truth to power in a meaningful way. By providing him cover, Isaac Farris Jr. and Alveda King leave us to wonder if their reluctance to call trump a racist is fear based. Are they afraid that calling trump a racist will have a negative financial effect on their respective endeavors that bear their family’s name? Are Isaac Farris Jr. and Alveda King faithful stewards of Dr. King’s dream or are they cashing in on it?

Do you feel the King family is honoring Dr. King's legacy?

Tell It Tuesday: Is #MeToo For All Women? What About #ThemToo?

By Ta-ning Connai

Hellllloooooo Everybody!
Wow, I feel like when a singer steps out onto the stage for the first time, looks out over the crowd and says to themselves, "MAMA I MADE IT!" Yeah, I'm a drama queen, but darn it, that's exactly how I feel! No I don't sing, and thank God you'll never have to hear me try. And even though I've done A LOT of different things (I'm like a cat with 9 lives!), I always wanted my own column with an awesome online magazine! Ooooooh Weeee, welcome to TA-NING'S TELL IT TUESDAY!

Um, I think I heard someone say, "Who the heck are you and what do you have to say?!"

My name is Ta-ning Connai and basically I'm a self-proclaimed "bridge" between the secular world and the church and I do my best to bring understanding and relatability between the two. The gap is way too big and it's causing people to fall, be hurt and get lost. I'm soooooo through with all that, aren't you?!

Now here's what you can expect...A mix of spiritual grit and humorous wit, while I take on topics like the pressure behind beauty trends, getting cheated on, haters, sexual harassment and more. Sometimes I rant and rave and throw my hands in the air, but it won't be as fun unless you do it with me. So come on, read along, and let's do this!

And speaking of sexual harassment, today's article is about how some women have it worse than others. So, whether you're a woman who says #metoo or a man simply trying to understand...there's more to the story, and I'm gonna be the one to tell it...
Continue
It took the lewd indiscretions of a famous Hollywood producer to spark mass media outrage about something that's been happening to the average woman by not-so-famous men for years. And while I thank the brave, innocent women that provoked so many (myself included) to band together through what I call the "virtual support group" #metoo, I can't help but think about the women whose shame and guilt from bad choices cause them to remain silent and in the dark.

Strippers, video vixens, pornstars. Groupies, goldiggers, prostitutes. Reports show that these women are sexually harassed, verbally abused and raped in rising numbers, and there's nothing they can do about it. Their cry is just a whisper and tells of "fun times" gone wrong and propositions that seemed way too good to pass on. But adage like, "Oh well you asked for it" and "You made your bed now lie in it" serve as the escape clause that allows perpetrators to go scott free and rape culture to remain alive and well. When we imagine the victims of sexual crimes, their faces are not the ones we see. But where's our compassion and outrage for them? What about #themtoo? Just because a person doesn’t have enough self love to pump the brakes on their own self destruction, doesn't mean abuse is alright. It's not ok, it's not ok, NO it's not ok.

The Bible has very choice words about The Seductress and the fiery warning for men to stay away rings loud like a smoke alarm (Proverbs 5:3-22). But there are also plenty of stories in which Jesus used a different frame of reference when forced to judge their situation. Jesus recognized the culture they faced back then (and He recognizes the culture women face today). He took into consideration everything that went into their decision making, including the voices that persuaded them to do so. He knew they were in the wrong place, but He knew they didn't get there on their own. So in essence, He blamed the men, forgave the women and challenged society to rid itself of the discriminating mindset that breeded ill treatment of God's most beloved creation. Jesus is still challenging us TODAY.

We have to start doing our part to make sure women feel better about themselves. No one's worth should be limited to their looks and their sex appeal. If we help women to find out who they are, in spite of what the ads, videos and song lyrics have to say, more women will be less apted to resort to low levels of acknowledgement just to feel like they belong. And they don't deserve to be VIOLATED! They shouldn't have to sleep with the club's best client just because it's their night to dance. A call girl doesn't deserve to be RAPED just because she put her own body up for sale.

Studies indicate that women who's earliest sexual experiences have been tainted with degradation of any kind, are more likely to become promiscuous, have some distorted view of sex and relationships, or engage in high risk sexual activities causing them the possibility of further violations.

We don't know the level of brokenness that gets such women where they are. But one thing we ought to know for sure. If we all got what we deserved, the planet would be HUMAN-FREE, we'd all be DEAD! The Bible says that "we are all like an unclean thing; all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags..." and that "...all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Isaiah 64:6, Romans 3:23).

We are no better and they are no worse. So, don't let me be the only one, come on and say it with me... #themtoo #themtoo #themtoo.

Do you feel we pick and choose who gets to be a part of #metoo?

Proud Mary Entertains at the Box Office!

Taraji P. Henson
By Mwabi Kaira

When I first saw the Proud Mary trailer over the holidays I knew that this would be the movie that would take me back to the theaters. I hadn’t been to the movies since Girl’s Trip back in the summer. The trailer showed Taraji P. Henson being a badass, the poster was shaped like an afro and all I could think of was that this was going to be the updated female blaxploitation like Foxy Brown, Coffy, and Cleopatra Jones.

Continue
I took my friend out to dinner for her birthday Friday night and the plan was to see Proud Mary after, but the drinks began to flow and we had a lot to catch up on so we decided to see the first matinee Saturday instead. We got our popcorn and drinks and settled in to our comfy seats ready to be entertained and feel like badasses too.

Taraji P. Henson is Mary, a hit woman working for an organized crime family in Boston- led by Benny (Danny Glover) and his much-appreciated eye candy son Tom (Billy Brown). Her life is completely turned around when she meets Danny (Jahi Di’Allo Winston), when a professional hit goes bad. In helping Danny, Mary makes a decision that changes the entire trajectory of the crime family and her life.

Taraji & Jahi Di’Allo Winston
Proud Mary holds your attention and the entire cast commands the screen, but the clear scene stealers are the maternal scenes between Mary and Danny. If Danny looks familiar it's because he played the young Ralph Tresvant in BET’s New Edition biopic last year. Mary and the above-mentioned Tom have just broken up and the sexual chemistry has not gone anywhere. Even though this is a crime family, it is nice to see a black family running things and doing normal things (outside crime) like the beyond bourgeois 65th birthday dinner for the matriarch of the family.

I enjoyed the movie and give it a solid B. The storyline was lacking in some areas and you could fill in the blanks too easily. Taraji’s wig game was on point and it was ever changing. I was expecting more action in the form of some kick ass fighting scenes but was okay with the action I got. Any black woman toting 2 guns, assassinating bad guys and still looking fabulous in the process wins in my book. It is clear by now that no matter what role Taraji is given to play, she will shine and make it her own.

Taraji not only stars in Proud Mary but executive produces it as well. It is directed by Iranian-Swedish film director Babak Najafi who directed London Has Fallen in 2016. Proud Mary was not heavily marketed and promoted and Henson has been critical of this suggesting that the movie’s predominantly black cast played a role in the lack of promotion. Despite all of this Proud Mary still brought in $12 million in its opening weekend.

Proud Mary is not an immediate classic but it is worth your time. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

When Faced With Anti-Muslim Bigotry Model Halima Aden Has The Perfect Response

Model Halima Aden
By Erickka Sy Savané
My 8-year-old daughter is obsessed with Somalian model Halima Aden. Kinglimaa as she is known on instagram, made history as the first teen to wear a burkini during the Miss Teen Minnesota USA pageant in 2016, the first hijab-wearer to grace the cover of Allure magazine last summer, and she's walked for Yeezy and shot campaigns for Nike and American Eagle. All this, and she's not even 21. For my daughter, who considers herself Muslim like her dad, and went through a stage in Pre-K where she loved wearing a hijab scarf, Halima is the perfect role model. As a mom, I'm not mad at her being enamored by a young woman who is always tastefully covered- call me funny that way. But not so funny is that not all moms can see the value of someone like Halima. In fact, not so long ago in high school, this Muslim who was born in a Kenyan refugee camp and raised in Minnesota, set off an alarm in the mother of her bff who made her stop being friends with Halima because she feared she'd recruit her into ISIS. Yes, this happened. How did Halima handle it? How does she handle racism period? Halima recently gave a speech at Glamour's Women Of The Year Summit where she shared just that...

Halima shares,
"At first I was like, 'You're kidding, right?' It made me want to cut myself off from everybody who doesn't share my race and culture. But my mother told me, "Sometimes people won't understand you. You have to show them who you are. And you'll have to understand their stories too."
To understand someone else's story is empathy, and my mother taught me living a rich life requires radical empathy. I can practice radical empathy because the empathy I've received has overwhelmed the bigotry. From aid workers at the refugee camp, to teachers who helped me, to pageant officials who let me compete for Miss Minnesota USA wearing my hijab and burkini, and launch a modeling career. When you swap anger for empathy, you can begin to understand my friend's mom; she's seeing Muslims portrayed as terrorist on the news. Meanwhile, Muslims haven't found much of a voice in this country.
I see the path forward. Show them who I am. Seek out people different from you. You might get hurt, but do it anyway. And if that girl and her mom are watching now, I hope they'll understand: The only radical thing about me is my empathy."
Bravo Sister!

Unleash Your Inner Confidence! #BeHerNow

You know how good you feel when you’re around that one friend? All of a sudden your uptight, awkward ass is funny, generous, adventurous, loving... goofy as hell. You actually LOL, til you cry or pee a little...you feel alive! You feel confident! You feel like... HER (aka the dopest version of yourself)!

Continue
That ‘you’ that you love so much is the realer, truer you. But you only allow HER to come out on occasion and around certain people.

When that friend comes over, you give yourself permission to stop pretending. You give yourself permission to RELAX. And in that moment of relaxation, you experience your real SELF, your natural state, as a current of joy or peace within. And when you’re steadily aware of that current, feeling it course through your inner world, you’re being HER.

Take the time and effort to find and stay in this current no matter what. Practice it constantly until you remember it’s who you are. That’s the work.

The current is Confidence.

Stand in it.

Be it.

I Started Using Wigs to Protect My Natural Hair From Winter Weather & Now I’m HOOKED

By Elle D. for BGLH

I’ll be totally honest — I’m not sure I’ve ever really understood the hype about wigs. I had a few when my hair was a teeny weeny afro just to appease myself when I got bored with the same style everyday, but once my natural hair grew out, I gave them all away. Also, I can’t cornrow to save my life, so I didn’t think they were a feasible option for me. But when the temperatures in my area dropped to the single digits, there was no way I was going to restyle my wash and go and sit around all day with wet hair (I don’t like blowdrying my wash and gos with a diffuser or under a dryer because it takes so long). Buns and braids were working for awhile, but I got tired of them and needed another option. I researched wig installs on YouTube that didn’t require cornrowing and got to work.

My twelve plaits only took about an hour to complete and I pinned them back with a ton of bobby pins. They got pretty flat! You can see me the day after wearing my wig in the video below. Admittedly, I don’t love this wig, but I needed something quick.

While I didn’t fall in love with the wig, I quickly fell in love with the convenience, the fact that wearing a wig was keeping my head warm (so clutch!), and that my hair was protected from the harsh winter winds. It was time to branch out and get some fun wigs, so I hopped on Amazon and Sams Beauty. Note, I 100% do not care if people know that I’m wearing a wig and don’t feel the need to spend hundreds of dollars on human hair and all that. Someone on my channel suggested a site where the wigs were $500‑1000 — they were gorgeous but oh my! Since there is no way I’d even be able to wear a wig in summer (it’s too hot and humid), it’s not worth it to me.

This wig was from Amazon and like $15. I think it makes me look like an anime character (my brother kindly called me a Disney villain) and I love it! To care for my hair under the wigs, I’ve been using I Heart Mimi Grow It Girl spray, which is aloe vera based and also contains rosemary essential oil, which is perfect for fighting scalp itchiness. When I want an oil spray, I use Uncle Funky’s Daughter Glossy.

My latest units from Sams Beauty are my new loves! I know that I would never be able to cut my real hair into this blunt style so I love that I can get this look so easily. The other unit I got is a favorite of many as it looks like my natural hair blown out.

So for now, I’m totally hooked on wiggin’ it. I absolutely love that I’m protecting my hair from this awful winter and it’s so fun changing my hair everyday. It’s like I get to be a new person with a quick switch up!

7 Things To Know Before Starting Your Own Business

$

By Michelby Coco Whitehead

January is all about new beginnings and executing ideas. For many women, that means finally saying bye-bye to the 9 to 5 and starting their own business. The National Women’s Business Council reports that there are over 1,500,000 black-owned female businesses in the United States. While sisters have always been capable of doing it for themselves, every new business owner will discover entrepreneurship is no walk in the park. Here are seven things to consider before you fire your boss!

Continue

1. Only offer what you excel at.
This sounds like a no-brainer, but it really is something that you must be certain about. For example, potential customers will come to you looking for services that you don’t necessarily offer, but could offer. Let’s say you are a hairstylist that specializes in natural hair, but a client wants you to do a lace front installation. If that’s not your lane, don’t go there. Be confident enough to know that giving a referral will not cause you to lose out on anything.

2. Your ideal client.
You cannot service everyone who has a need for what you offer. You’re probably thinking ‘Huh? That doesn’t make sense.' However, every bride is not interested in spending $10,000 on wedding decor. Some brides prefer to be frugal, and that’s okay. So, if you want to sell high-end services, target customers with higher earning potential. In turn, this will allow you to market your brand to the right clients for you.

3. Prepare to go virtual.
The marketplace is so much bigger than your hometown, so brush up on your computer skills! You can reach more potential customers by offering products and services virtually. Many entrepreneurs are also presenting workshops and empowerment conferences online.

4. Pick a payment system.
In 2018, we do not have time to chase clients down for payments owed! There are many systems and mobile apps for business. Test a few out to see what you’re comfortable using. Dosh, is the latest app and it has incentives for business owners to make money through referrals until January 21, 2018.

5. You don’t need to hire a business coach immediately.

Listen, I know social media is flooded with amazing business gurus who have incredible platforms, but take your time when choosing a coach. If you have your eye on a coach, take advantage of his or her Facebook group first. This will allow you to see how knowledgeable and sincere that person is.

6. Network your butt off.
Your network increases your net worth! Attend events and mixers where you live as well as in cities you want to start building your presence. Opportunities will not fall into your lap on a regular basis; they must be created.

7. Celebrate your accomplishments.
Celebrating the little victories in your entrepreneur journey will motivate you to stick to what you started, even when business isn’t booming!

Do you have any business tips to share?

Must See TV: 'Black Lightning' and '9-1-1'

Nafessa Williams, Cress Williams, China Anne McClain
By Mwabi Kaira

It's been a long time since black audiences have had an actual variety of shows led by an entirely black cast or lead black actors to choose from. It feels like a 90’s resurgence right now and boy, does it feel great! These two shows are off to a great start and they are MUST SEE TV.

Cress Williams is 'Black Lightning'

Black Lightning

Confession: I know nothing about Marvel and DC Comics and the superheroes in them so I wasn’t sure I would be lost watching CW’s Black Lightning which premiered Tuesday night. I know die-hard fans who know everything about these fictional subspecies of humans born with superhuman abilities known as metahumans. Black Lightning is a metahuman created in 1977 by DC Comics.

I settled in with 2.31 million other viewers and was thrown into the complex lives of the Pierce family. Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams and yes he played our beloved Scooter on Living Single), is the principal of Garfield High and the brother who would do anything to invest and protect the kids in the neighborhood. His daughters Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain - remember her from Daddy’s Little Girls?) are night and day in personalities. Anissa is woke and proudly protesting injustice while fiercely protecting her little sister and working as a teacher at Garfield. Jennifer is sick of being compared to her father and sister and doesn’t want to be the goody-two-shoes of the family so she makes questionable teenage choices with huge consequences.

The premiere episode of Black Lightning gave us protesting, driving while black blues, gang violence, sibling strife, and drama free co-parenting between Jefferson and his ex-wife Lynn (Christine Adams). Jefferson Pierce happily put the superpowers of Black Lightning to bed a decade ago as a promise to Lynn but must now resurrect him to save his girls and keep his neighborhood from harm.

Husband and wife duo Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil (The Game, Being Mary Jane) created Black Lightning and it airs on Tuesday nights at 9 PM on The CW.

NEXT UP....
Connie Britton, Angela Bassett & Peter Krause

9-1-1

I only needed one name to tune into Fox’s 9-1-1 when it premiered on January 3rd; Angela Bassett. Not just any Angela Bassett, but Waiting to Exhale Bernadine Harris hair Angela Bassett. 9-1-1 explores the lives and careers of first responders; police officers, paramedics and firefighters, and 911 phone operators. These first responders put their lives on the line every day to save others and draws from real-life, high-pressure experiences. So far we have seen a young man thrown from a rollercoaster ride, a baby rescued from being flushed down a toilet, a yellow python wrapped around its owners neck, and how first responders deal with medical emergencies of their own.

Angela Bassett plays Athena Grant, LAPD patrol sergeant keeping her head above water as her marriage to Michael (Rockmond Dunbar) is ending. 9-1-1 focuses on the firehouse where Athena’s friend Henrietta “Hen” Wilson (Aisha Hinds, who you may remember doing a fantastic job as Harriet Tubman in Underground) is a firefighter/paramedic. Scenes between sister-girls on the job being supportive and loving are much welcomed in comparison to the “we can’t get along” narrative usually shown. Cocoa Brown playing Carla Price, caretaker to 911 operator Abby Clark’s Mom, is much needed light heartedness in storylines so heavy. Rounding out 9-1-1’s cast are Peter Krause, Oliver Stark, Kenneth Choi and Connie Britton.

9-1-1 is created by 'American Horror Story' creator Ryan Murphy and had a record 15 million viewers tune in to the premiere episode. On January 16 it was announced that 9-1-1 had already been picked up for season 2 after only 2 episodes.

9-1-1 airs on Wednesday nights at 9 PM on Fox.

Have you checked out either of these shows?
