Sanaa Lathan Stars in New Netflix Film 'Nappily Ever After'

“Love &  Basketball” and “Shots Fired” star Sanaa Lathan will play the main character in a Netflix original film based on the book “Nappily Ever After” by Trisha R. Thomas.

Deadline reports that Tina Chism (“ATL”, “Drumline”) drafted the script with rewrites from Lisa Loomer (“Girl, Interrupted”), Adam Brooks (“Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason”) and most recently filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood (“Love & Basketball”, “Beyond the Lights”).

The film will take the same name as the NAACP Image Award-winning book, which is an all-too familiar tale for natural-haired Black women:

“What happens when you toss tradition out the window and really start living for yourself? Venus Johnston has a great job, a beautiful home, and a loving live-in boyfriend named Clint, who happens to be a drop-dead gorgeous doctor. She also has a weekly beauty-parlor date with Tina, who keeps Venus's long, processed hair slick and straight. But when Clint--who's been reluctant to commit over the past four years--brings home a puppy instead of an engagement ring, Venus decides to give it all up. She trades in her long hair for a dramatically short, natural cut and sends Clint packing...”

Our hair often signals life, self or worldview shifts, starting the process of self-discover, transformation and growth.

Haifaa Al-Mansour (“Wadjda”) will direct the film, with Marc Platt, Tracey Bing (“Southside With You”), Jared Leboff and Lathan producing.

Production of the film begins this month in Atlanta.

This is at least Lathan and Bythewood’s third time working together, first on the film “Love & Basketball” then “Shots Fired”, the critically-acclaimed television show on FOX about race and police brutality.

Hopefully their storytelling magic will be the same as it was on these successful projects.

What do you think this film? Have you read the book?

New Web Series 'The North Pole' Tackles Gentrification in Oakland

What do evil-looking polar bears and the North Pole have to do with Oakland, California?

Well, “The North Pole”, a new comedic web series, can explain. Focused on three best friends born and raised in North Oakland, CA, the show is about their struggles to stay rooted as their neighborhood turns into a place where people of color are an “endangered species”.

According to the show’s website, “Across seven outrageous episodes, Nina, Marcus, and Benny fight, dream, and plot hilarious schemes to save the place they call home. Facing both gentrification and global warming, they combat evil landlords, crazy geoengineering plots, and ultimately each other.”

“We wanted to challenge those false narratives that Latinos and younger people don't care about climate change; people of color and Latinos are not victims or bystanders but are multilayered and powerful protagonists,” the series’ director, Chilean-American Yvan Iturriaga, told NBC News. “It’s easier and more acceptable to (show) that if you approach it as a comedy.”

The name of the show pays homage to North Oakland’s nickname in the 1990s and 200s, which was, you guessed it: the North Pole. Those who grew up in the area called themselves Polar Bears, so it makes sense that the people who witness the changes in their beloved neighborhood become mad Polar Bears.

Gentrification is all too common for Black communities around the country, while land, climate and safety issues disproportionally plague communities of color, because they’re more likely to live in areas with contaminated water, polluted air and lead-laced homes.

“It’s hella funny and hella relevant. I love how (the series) incorporates comedy with serious issues like gentrification,” said Reyna Amaya, the 33-year-old comedian, actress and voice over artist who plays Nina, a high school science teacher. “Gentrification is part of my personal story. My mom couldn't afford a house in San Francisco, so we had to move to Oakland when I was in middle school.”

With Spike Lee-esque imagery, high quality videography and relatable storylines, the show has all of the elements of a hit. It actually feels like it should be streaming on Netflix or Hulu right now.

The series’ world premiere is on September 7th at Oakland’s historic Grand Lake Theater, and on September 12th, the entire season will be available to stream online at TheNorthPoleShow.com.

“The North Pole” is written and produced by Josh Healey, produced by Darren Colston (“A Wrinkle in Time”) and executive produced by Movement Generation.

The show stars Reyna Amaya (“All Def Digital”) as Nina, Donte Clark (“Romeo is Bleeding”) as Marcus, Santiago Rosas (“Home Front”) as Benny, and Eli Marienthal (“American Pie”) as Finn. Special guests include comedian W. Kamau Bell, hip-hop artist Mistah Fab, Black Panther hero Ericka Huggins, and emcee and activist Boots Riley.

Take a look at the web series’ entertaining trailer below.

In this season of new beginnings, our sis Solange Knowles is choosing self-care.

The “Seat at the Table” singer deleted her Twitter account on Tuesday after shouting out activist Takiyah and posting:

As kids start the new school year, part of the nation has chosen to demonstrate their dedication to the past.

Most of us have more than likely heard about Charlottesville, VA, specifically last weekend’s White Nationalist march against the removal of a Confederate statue that led to a clash between anti-racism protestors, brawls, injuries and the death of a protestor.

A couple of days later, in Durham, North Carolina, protestors removed a Confederate Soldiers Monument. Takiyah Thompson, a 22-year-old student at North Carolina University (an UBCU), participated in stomping the structure to the ground and is facing felony charges – along with four others – for the act.

This Tuesday, Thompson was arrested, charged with participating in a riot with property damage in excess of $1,500, inciting a riot with damage that exceeds the same amount, disorderly conduct and property damage.

In response to this, Solange spoke her piece, dropped the mic then protected her peace by leaving the platform before trolls could respond.

After deleting her profile, she shared a note via Instagram Stories explaining why she left the site:

A post shared by The Shade Room (@theshaderoom) on

We only have so much energy to dedicate to each moment in life, and just one minute focused on the negativity can drain our willpower, strength and peace to focus on the positive and do what we’re able to do to encourage and uplift ourselves and others.

The day to day is already difficult without the nonsense, so maybe we need to follow Solange’s lead and disconnect, even if it’s just for a day or a few hours.

Although Solange’s absence will be felt on Twitter, we still get to watch her beautiful performances, get heart eyes emoji over her selfies and revel in her #BlackGirlMagic on Instagram.

What do you think about Solange getting rid of her Twitter account? Have you taken a break from social media so you can practice self-care?

Torres' character was an original cast member when the legal drama debuted on USA Network in 2011. The character, Jessica Pearson, left the show after the Season 6 finale to pursue a love interest in Chicago. According to Deadline, the offshoot, which, unlike the mothership series won’t be a legal drama but set in the world of Chicago politics.

When her character departed, Torres told USA Networks “Playing Jessica Pearson has been one of the greatest rides of my career. It isn't often that an actress gets the opportunity to embody so rich a character."

Now the network is using the Season 7 finale as a back door pilot episode to a new show to air on the network, with Pearson at the forefront.

Torres, who originally pitched the project to Universal Cable Productions, (the network behind suits) is ecstatic to begin filming.

“I’m beyond grateful for this opportunity and the level of confidence Bonnie Hammer, Jeff Wachtel and everyone at UCP have in me and the potential of this project,” Torres said in a statement to Deadline. “Can’t wait to get started!”

No release dates have been set yet, as the show is in the early stages of production, but this show is a hot ticket item!

If you haven't seen the hilarious Girls Trip yet--girl, what are you waiting for?

When four friends–Regina Hall, Tiffany Haddish, Jada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah—travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival during a girls trip, sisterhoods are rekindled, wild sides are rediscovered, and there’s enough dancing, drinking, brawling and romancing to make the Big Easy blush.

The raunchy comedy brought in $30.4 million in its opening weekend--and just crossed the $100 million mark at the domestic box office!

“The films that I've done do appeal to black women,” said director Malcolm Lee, “but here's an opportunity for black women to tell the story — for them to be the leads and tell it the way they want to see it, the way they see themselves.”

Inspired by the kind of movies “usually with white guys — they go off and have a fun trip and behave really badly,” Lee decided to recreate the experience “with some chocolate girls.”

Audiences agreed, and Girls Trip became the highest grossing opening for a live action comedy in 2017.

A large part of the movie's success is that women can see a little bit of themselves in each character. “Malcolm and I wanted the couth, articulate, well-mannered and high-powered [woman], but also the down to Earth, ’round the way girl,” said producer Will Packer. “We wanted the ultra bougie and the super ratchet.”

And crossing the $100 million mark is a celebration for us all--Girls Trip” has become the first film produced, written, directed by and starring African Americans to do so.

Lee attributes the movie's topping the box office to a combination of things. “I definitely think it was a combination of things. First of all, you’re dealing with an undeserved audience that Will and I and the studio as well felt that this was a ‘Sex and the City’ for black women," he said. "Quite honestly, the precursor to ‘Sex and the City’ was ‘Living Single’ and ‘Girlfriends.’ I think that it’s a movie that celebrated them at a place that felt like an event with the setting being at the Essence Festival. I felt women were going to own this movie and claim it as their movie...This is fun and this is black women telling their story the way they see themselves. Black girl magic is real, and everyone's craving it right now."

What do you think about this new record being set? What do you think has made Girls Trip so successful?

Can Natural Ingredients Cause Scalp Issues

We all want a healthy scalp since it is the foundation of good hair. When we start experiencing problems with our scalp, we start to question the products we use and rightfully so. Many of the issues people experience can be caused by the products they use on their scalp, but there is more to it than just that one aspect. Many people think because they use all natural ingredients or natural products, they shouldn’t have any scalp issues. Again, the matter is more complicated than that simple assumption. So, can natural ingredients cause scalp issues? Let’s take a closer look at this question, as well as the relationship between the products we use and the overall health of the scalp.

Can Natural Ingredients Cause Scalp Issues?

While natural ingredients are inherently better than harsh chemicals, they can still cause scalp issues. Natural ingredients are still the healthier alternative to chemicals, but it’s important to know what ingredients are in your products and what they do exactly. For example, while lemon has antibacterial properties that make it great for the scalp to fight an overabundance of fungus and bacteria that can lead to irritation. However, if used in excess on a scalp without an existing overabundance of these organisms, it can certainly lead to dryness and irritation. It is also possible to have an allergic reaction to a natural ingredient that you haven’t been exposed to previously.

While the ingredients in your natural hair products can be causing the discomfort on your scalp, another common culprit could be overusing products. While it’s true the scalp needs certain things to stay healthy, overdoing it can only make things worse instead of better. If you are using the wrong products and using them too often, it is no wonder your scalp is going crazy. According to an article on everydayhealth.com, “Over-shampooing with the wrong products can strip hair’s natural oils, drying and weakening hair cuticles, and lead to hair breakage,” explains Marnie B. Nussbaum, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City. A scalp stripped of its natural oils will quickly become, dry, itchy, and inflamed.

Another possibility for your scalp suddenly going crazy when you switch to natural products is that your pH balance is out of balance. The scalp will naturally try to adjust to new ingredients to the best of its ability when you switch products, but sometimes it takes a while to get the right balance back in place. When it comes down to it, you may have an actual condition such as psoriasis or dandruff that needs to be treated by a dermatologist. Many times, people do not begin to show symptoms for some scalp issues until they switch to new products. If your scalp is causing you discomfort, it’s important to discuss it with your dermatologist or doctor to help pinpoint the exact issue.

Spelman Alum Opens First Chick-fil-A in Downtown LA

At age 26, Spelman alumnus and Metro Atlantan Ashley Derby became one of the youngest franchise owners of a Chick-fil-A, when she opened a prime location near the University of Southern California (USC) in 2011. She also became the youngest Black female franchise owner in the company’s history.

Now Derby will continue to make history as she opens Chick-fil-A’s first downtown Los Angeles location this Fall. And we’re talking prime real estate here. Positioned at the busy financial district’s intersection of South Figueroa and 7th (an area often used as b-roll footage in films set in Los Angeles), the location will be 6,500 square feet and occupy two stories.

Leading the new downtown LA location will be old hat for Derby. She’s been a team member with Chick-fil-A since she was 15 years old. An since those earlier days in which she used her earnings to purchase her first car, she has learned every facet of operating a Chick-fil-A location from “squeezing lemons to taking orders in the drive-thru, you name it” as she recounted in Chick-fil-A promotional video.

As the company proved a good fit for her, Derby continued the job as director on the leadership team during her college years at Spelman and even went as far as to switch her major to an economic focus to better prepare for a future with the restaurant chain. She moved to Los Angeles at Chick-fil-A’s request and even attended a series of management and development programs for the organization.

All of that preparation culminated with the opening of Derby’s USC location. Coupled with her hard work and dedication, it was no wonder that Derby received the company’s Symbol of Success—an honor bestowed on Chick-fil-A operators whose businesses earn high sales growth.

What do you think about Ashley's accomplishment? How can we encourage others within the Black community to open franchises?

Coily Hair Care Routine

If you have coily hair, there are special considerations to make sure your hair stays healthy and beautiful. Whether you are new to being a natural or just looking to tweak your habits, here are a few tips on keeping a successful coily hair care routine.

  1. The most important part of any coily hair care routine is moisturizing. Coils need moisture more than other textures so keeping them moisturized is paramount. Most naturals with coils know the importance of using a daily leave-in conditioner to avoid dryness. A few good ones for coils are Aunt Jackie’s Curls & Coils Quench and Fantasia Curl and Coily Leave In.
  2. Oils are your best friend. While moisture is important in the form of daily products use, natural oils are also essential to the health of your coils. Certain oils can offer moisture that is heavier than most products, such as coconut oil, so it has an easier time penetrating the cuticle, but more importantly, oils help to seal strands. This will keep moisture locked into your coils for soft, healthy hair! A few great oils for sealing coils are almond, argan, and olive which you should apply anywhere from once a week to every night, depending on the state of your hair.
  3. Learning to perfect the wash and go method is a lifesaver. The wash and go will ensure proper cleansing, conditioning, and give you a great style on busy days. Here’s a quick video on how to master this element of coily hair care routine.

  4. Safeguard against breakage as much as possible. Breakage is a real problem for coils since they tend to be thinner. A few things to avoid that make hair more prone to breakage include the overuse of heat tools which weakens the keratin bonds, and brushes that tug at strands while detangling. There are also products that are designed to fortify strands again breakage such as Shea Moisture Anti-Breakage Masque which will help safeguard hair against breakage.

  5. Consider following the LOC method for your coils. This is a must-know routine for all curlies, but especially for naturalistas with coils. It consists of a method leave-in, oil, and conditioner. Find out more about it here

Chance the Rapper is a huge proponent of education, having recently donated 30,000 backpacks to Chicago students in celebration of back-to-school season. Well, it looks like Lil’ Chano from 79th desires to attain some advanced knowledge himself because he’s on the hunt for higher education!

Specifically, he has his sights set on an HBCU. What’s his choice? Chance took to Twitter to announce his top pick:

It’s Clark Atlanta Universty! While many colleges have awarded celebrities with honorary degrees, Chance wants to go all in. Basically, he wants the full college experience! I can’t help but think that -- other than his celebrity status -- his community services should warrant him extra credit in the admissions process.

His initial public interest actually resulted in a hilarious Twitter beef when Morehouse’s Twitter account tried to hit Chance with the “wyd?” or “hey, bighead” type tweet.

CAU wasn’t having it, though. They weren’t going to let Chance slip through their fingers. So, the school clapped back with:

Ha! Let me get my popcorn ready.

Seriously, though, I am thrilled that Chance wants to venture toward higher education! That way, when he’s encouraging higher education to those who look up to them, he can also look the part.

Sending good vibes to you Chance and we can’t wait to see which school you end up with!

What do you think about Chance’s venture into higher education? What school would you like to see him attend?

While on a tour of Washington D.C., two white New Jersey high school students decided to pay a visit to Howard University's campus to have lunch. The problem is, they decided to show up on an historically Black campus wearing 'Make America Great Again' hats.

The two students both wore 'Make America Great Again' hats, while Allie Vandee, one of the students also wore a 'MAGA' t-shirt. The attire caused a negative uproar on campus, resulting in a man stealing one of the 'MAGA' hats. The hat would be returned shortly after by an advisor.

After realizing how big of an issue they were causing, the chaperone encouraged all of the students from the tour to leave. But it didn't stop Vandee from leaving a statement on Twitter claiming she was the victim.

“While we were waiting in line not knowing the HU is a predominantly ‘black’ school, which either way SHOULDN’T MATTER, a man came up and stole Sarah’s hat,” Vandee wrote.

Vandee continued, “We were harassed continuously. The students took videos and pictures of us saying WE were being ‘disrespectful’, and that ‘us being caucasian, we should have known better’.”

But Howard University wasn't having it!

Howard University officials issued the following statement following the uproar on campus:

It’s no secret that the best way to make money as a musician is to do something other than music. The richest moguls in hip-hop all made their money elsewhere. Jay-Z and Diddy both spend more time managing the careers of other very musicians than actually making their own. Chamillionaire is spending his days investing in tech start ups. 50 Cent is still eating off the Coca-Cola Vitamin Water Deal he made in the late 2000’s. The latest rapper turned investor is none other than Who? MIKE JONES.

Mike Jones rose to fame in the mid -2000's off of a slew of Houston-centric singles, but these days it seems that he’s maintaining a lower profile and a much higher bank account. Jones has put down the gold chains in exchange for chain link fences. He’s made the leap from the rap game for the real estate world and has apparently been doing so quite successfully.

Jones had been teasing the ventures of Jones & Carrington on his Instagram page for a little bit now with videos of homes that his company has undertaken, and they look stunning. Most of the homes featured on his social media accounts (now dubbed Where_MikeJones) are large multi bedroom mansions featured mostly in Texas.

Recently the business took a leap forward and obtained 50 acres of land to build 23 homes on. The gated community will be the investors first full-scale neighborhood, and his excitement both on and off the gram is evident. Michaela Coel Says 'Chewing Gum' Won't Renew For Third Season

The cheeky British comedy we’ve come to love seems to have come to an end.

Michaela Coel announced that her hit Netflix series “Chewing Gum” probably won’t return for a third season any time soon. Coel told UK’s Broadcast  that she thought she’d reached “a creative peak” last season, and confirmed that she’d be moving on with a tweet.

E4 confirmed the news in a statement, saying: "Chewing Gum is a vibrant, hilarious and unique comedy of which we are incredibly proud. Though there currently aren't any plans for a 3rd series, we hope to work with the hugely talented Michaela Coel again soon."

Starring Coel as the Ghanaian Beyoncé-obsessed Pentecostal virgin Tracey, “Chewing Gum” first aired on the UK’s Channel E4 before making its way to Netflix. The comedy earned Coel two awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, and a crowd of American fans—but her reps say it’s time for her to focus on other projects. “Michaela is not currently writing a third series of Chewing Gum as she is focusing on some other projects, but is not closing the door to the possibility in the future.”

“I mean, Chewing Gum ages me 15 years every time I do it — it's insane. It's brilliant working on something else,” Coel told Digital Spy. “It means I can really focus on one thing, instead of spreading myself thin.”

But don’t count another season out just yet.

"She's a very funny and clever writer so she'll always have a home here if she wants to do a project with us. It's bittersweet but it's always been part of what we do here. We establish people and then there's a point where they have to move on," E4 exec Fiona McDermott told Broadcast.

Another E4 source told RadioTimes, "We are really keen to do more but nothing will be confirmed for a while. Michaela is very busy and has worked so hard on this series. She just wants to catch her breath. But everyone’s delighted with this series and the feeling is we'd love more."

What did you think about Season 2 of Chewing Gum? Are you surprised that it's ending?

A New R. Kelly Accuser Speaks Out About Sexual Abuse She Allegedly Endured At 16

Kristen Zeis for BuzzFeed News
Ever since recent reports of R. Kelly running a “sex cult” for teens, there has been a renewed conversation around the R&B singer and ephebophilia.

This time, 24 year-old old Jerhonda Pace spoke with BuzzFeed News contributor, Jim DeRogatis to finally come forward with her own story. DeRogatis actually first released the initial cult report, as well. After being a longtime fan and supporter of R. Kelly, Pace is finally speaking out against the singer, alleging that she was involved in an abusive sexual relationship with Kelly.

She first met R. Kelly at the age of 15, when she attended his 2008 child pornography trial to support the singer. Pace claims that soon after -- following a party at his Chicago suburb house when she was 16 years old -- she began an eight-month sexual relationship with him in 2009. Pace is currently married and was then known as Jerhonda Johnson.

The age of consent in Illinois is 17 years old and Pace alleges that she told Kelly she was 16, to which the singer demanded that she claim to be 19 years old.

During the eight month stint, Pace claims that she endured both emotional and physical abuse from Kelly. She also claims that he was very controlling about the way she dressed, when she could bathe, and who she contacted via phone, which mirrors other claims associated with the cult allegations.

Everything came to a head in January 2010 when Kelly caught Pace texting a friend of hers without his permission, which reportedly ended in abusive results. “I was slapped and I was choked and I was spit on,” said Pace.

At the time, Pace decided not to press charges since she felt the chances of him being convicted after being acquitted in the 2008 child pornography child were very slim to none. Pace signed a nondisclosure agreement and settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.

However, Pace is now breaking the NDA and risking a legal suit for the bigger picture: she wants to help other women who she claims have also been “brainwashed” by the singer.

“If I can speak out and I can help them get out of that situation, that’s what I will do,” Pace noted.

“I didn’t have anybody to speak up on my behalf when I was going through what I was going through with him,” she added. “I just really hope I can help these women out. Kelly needs to be stopped.”

In response to Pace’s claims, R. Kelly’s representative recently released a statement to BuzzFeed. “The allegations against Mr. Kelly are false, and are being made by individuals known to be dishonest,” per the statement. “It is clear these continuing stories are the result of the effort of those with personal agendas who are working in concert to interfere with and damage his career. Mr. Kelly again denies any and all wrong doing and is taking appropriate legal action to protect himself from ongoing defamation.”

As citizens around the nation protest, topple and destroy Confederate statues, symbols and history, it makes sense to think of what should stand in their place.

If you could replace a Confederate statue and monument with a statue honoring a person, group or idea, what would you choose?

How about Barack Obama? Michelle Obama? Marcus Garvey? Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.? Malcolm X? Rosa Parks? Henrietta Lacks?

Coflin believes that a statue of Elliott is the perfect replacement for the 35-foot monument in Olde Towne Portsmouth, erected in the late 1800s for “the Confederate dead of Portsmouth and Norfolk County.”

The petition asks, “Who better to encapsulate the culture and spirit of the city enshrined in a new monument than Grammy Award winning rapper, dancer, and record producer Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott?”

The call for fans to support the request mentions Elliot’s rise from humble beginnings to become a platinum recording artist, with over 30 million albums sold.

“Together we can put white supremacy down, flip it and reverse it. Let us come together in getting City Council to erect this statue in honor of Missy Elliott and all those in the great City of Portsmouth who work it each and every day. Ycamerpus Etihw! Missy is all of us. Missy is everything the Confederacy was not,” the petition says (emphasis as written in petition).

Using some of Missy’s most notable lyrics, Coflin uses social media to draw a diverse group of petition supporters.

The five-time-Grammy-award-winning artist has always been one of my favorites, and I’m excited to see that her hometown wants to honor her greatness, creativity and individuality in such a public way.

She always had my cousins and me dancing, singing and rapping along with her videos. We couldn’t get enough of “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)”!

In an interview with the Huffington Post, Coflin said,

“Missy is Portsmouth’s hometown icon. The mayor of Portsmouth has already declared his support for moving the current monument from where it stands to a nearby cemetery where Confederate soldiers are buried. This will leave a void where the current one stands. Missy represents the diversity of Portsmouth and what hard work and perseverance can do. An inspiration to the town.”

As of today, the petition has 28,249 signatures of the 35,000 requested.

Are you going to sign the petition for a Missy Elliott statue? If you could replace any statue with one of your choice, what would you replace it with?

Many of us have heard of Madam C.J. Walker, the first self-made African-American female millionaire. But how much do we really know about Ms. Walker?

Thankfully, an NBA player, NAACP Image award-winning director and talented actress are working together to make sure we know more about the legendary woman behind the first black hair care empire.

Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer (“The Help”, “Hidden Figures”) has joined the cast of the upcoming limited series about Walker’s life as an entrepreneur, activist and philanthropist. Kasi Lemmons (“Eve’s Bayou”, “Talk to Me”) (who is from my hometown of St. Louis!) is on board to direct and executive produce the pilot, and Nicole Asher will write and co executive produce.

The series will be produced by LeBron James through his production company SpringHill Entertainment, which is currently behind “Survivor’s Remorse” on Starz. His company’s co-founder, Maverick Carter, will also produce. The project will be Spring Hill’s first scripted drama.

The show is an adaptation based on the bestselling biography “On Her Ground”, written by Walker’s great-great-granddaughter, A’Lelia Bundles, who will serve as a consult on the series. Published in 2002, the book tells the story of Walker’s life and journey to becoming the wealthiest Black woman in America at the time.

“I am really proud of this project and that SpringHill will be partnering with Octavia to tell this important story,” James said. “Every American should all know the story of Madam C.J. Walker. She was an innovator, entrepreneur, social activist, and total game changer whose story has been left out of the history books. I hope this project lives up to her legacy with a story that will educate and inspire.”

The film is in line with Spring Hill’s mission to spotlight hidden African-American figures who helped shape American history. The company recently donated $2.5 million to the Smithsonian’s Muhammad Ali exhibit at the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

“It’s so exciting for all of us to keep building SpringHill, see it mature, and continue to find its voice. We are really focused on growing with authenticity and substance,” Carter said. “For us, this is totally about great stories and great partners. Partnering with Octavia to tell the story of Madam C.J. Walker is the ideal first project for SpringHill to take an important step into scripted drama.”

Variety reports that Netflix is interested in the series, which might be the show’s home.

Zero Gravity and Warner Bros. will partner on the production, The Holders (through Zero Gravity), James and Carter (through SpringHill), and Spencer (through her production company Orit Entertainment) will all serve as exec producers.

Have you read Madam C.J. Walker’s biography? Are you interested learning more about her life?

Barack and Michelle Obama Send-Off Malia To Harvard in An Emotional Goodbye

One of the most bittersweet moments of a parent’s life is likely sending off their offspring to college. Though it is a proud moment to see the child you’ve raised head on to pursue higher education, in many cases, they are also going off to live on their own on the school’s campus.

Probably one of the most famous incoming college freshman is Malia Obama, who will be beginning her fall semester at the esteemed Harvard. Much like any typical set of parents, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama helped Malia move into her dorm dwellings. The family was fresh off a vacation at Martha’s Vineyard.

Because of the Obama’s fame, of course this wasn’t your typical move-in. A nice crowd of people swarmed the area, taking pictures of the family as Malia embarked on a new journey in her life.

Along with several shots of Malia hanging out with her friends, a video was posted of Mr. & Mrs. Obama leaving the dormitory into their suburbans, with their faces covered with sunglasses.

We can safely assume that it was an emotional time! Especially in Mr. Obama’s case, as we received insight into his feelings during a 2015 Michigan speech where he claimed Malia told him on the first day of her senior year in high school, “Daddy, you know, you realize this is probably going to be the last time that you ever send me off for my first day of school,” to which the former president became choked up while recounting the story.

It hasn’t yet been confirmed whether or not Malia will be accompanied by Secret Service during her tenure at Harvard, but there are options available thanks to a 2013 law Obama signed during his term as President that secured lifetime Secret Service detail for the president and first lady. While it’s impossible to have an entirely “normal” college life given her name, Harvard is actually known for its campus (and students within it) not causing such a big scene when they have notable names attend their school, such as Natalie Portman. Yara Shahidi (Black-ish, Grown-ish) will also be joining the campus this fall.

Congrats to Malia Obama for her new educational adventure! We are sure she will do fantastic!

Are you excited about Malia Obama starting at Harvard this fall? What do you think she will major in?

Missouri Governor Halts Execution of Marcellus Williams After DNA Evidence Raises Questions About Guilt

If we didn’t know before, Ava DuVernay’s documentary film “13th” laid it all out for the world to see. The United States justice system is anything but fair, and has become a new form of slavery.

Countless men and women around the nation have gone to prison and/or died for crimes they didn’t commit.

Thankfully, a Missouri man scheduled to be executed on August 22 will get another chance to prove his innocence.

Yesterday, Missouri Governor Eric Greitens halted the execution of Marcellus Williams, who was convicted of fatally stabbing former St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter Lisha Gayle during a burglary at her suburban St. Louis home in 1998.

In an executive order, the governor said that he was issuing a stay of execution for Williams after DNA raised questions about his guilt.

Williams’ attorneys cited DNA evidence found on the murder weapon that matched another unknown person, but not Williams’.

St. Louis County prosecutor Bob McCulloch, who also led the grand jury proceedings for Darren Wilson after he killed Mike Brown in 2014, said that there is plenty other evidence to convict Williams, and that there is “zero possibility” that he is innocent.

Greitens said that he will appoint a five-member board of inquiry including retired judges, who will make a recommendation to the governor regarding whether or not Williams should be executed.

Wrongful convictions aren’t new to the state of Missouri. In 2013, ABC 17 News reported that since 1991, 29 Missouri men and women walked free from prison due to exonerations.

During the 1980s and 1990s, several Black men and women in St. Louis were convicted of crimes of which they have either been deemed innocent of committing or are still fighting for their innocence.

Examples are Ellen Reasonover (convicted in 1983, exonerated in 1999, Bob McCulloch was also the prosecutor), Reginald “Reggie” Clemons (convicted in 1993, conviction overturned in 2015, currently imprisoned), Leron Hornaday (convicted in 1997, currently imprisoned), and more.

With the help of a 259,000 supporter petition, St. Louis activists, national social justice figures like Shaun King, and music stars like Big Boi, Williams gets another chance at proving that he, too, was wrongly convicted.

Have you had a chance to watch the film “13th”? What do you think about Williams’ case?

CN Exclusive: Protest Against 'Father of Gynecology' Statue Shines Broader Light on Racism in Healthcare

J. Marion Sims may have revolutionized medical care as it pertains to women’s health in the 1800s but the dubious approaches he employed begs the question as to whether a statue should be erected in his honor—that statue is currently standing outside of the New York Academy of Medicine. According to the Black Youth Project 100 (BYP100), Sims’ history reflects a recurring theme of racism and exploitation in American healthcare and therefore needs to come down.

On August 19, several members of Black Youth Project 100 (BYP100), an equal rights Black youth activist group founded in 2013, staged a demonstration in protest of the Sims statue. Dressed in hospital gowns spattered with red paint, their strikingly “bloody” demonstration called attention to Sims’ practice of surgery and experimentation on three enslaved Black women whose names were Anarcha, Betsy and Lucy. Several publications (including this New York Times article and this article in the Journal of Medical Ethics) have noted how Sims operated on these women without anesthetic and nearly caused the death of one woman from septicemia when he used a sponge to wipe urine from her bladder during a procedure.

Capitalizing on the recent events in Charlottesville and the momentum building for the removal of Confederate statues and monuments, BYP100’s provocative protest garnered much attention across social media.

“Even though many of us have been calling for the removal of the J. Marion Sims statue for years, our voices (until now) largely fell on deaf ears,” explained Seshat Mack, the chair of organizing for BYP100 New York. “In New York City, we noticed many folks thinking of racist statues and memorials to white supremacists as a ‘Southern’ thing, but memorializing White supremacy is an American problem—not just a Southern one. It’s a problem we need to reckon with as a country.”

Supporters for removal of the statue include City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, but New York Mayor Bill De Blasio has said only that officials would review “symbols of hate” on city property.

On social media, the BYP100 protest has drawn a great deal of support but dissenters have also weighed in with the notion that Sims’ practices were acceptable according to the beliefs of the time and were warranted because of the affliction he was aiming to treat. During the 1800s, it was a commonly believed that African-Americans were more tolerant of and/or did not feel pain at all while Sims’ experiments were based upon the desire to cure vesicovaginal fistula.

Fistula is a dire complication of childbirth as a result of obstructed labor in which a hole develops between a woman’s bladder and her vagina and leads to sustained, continual, uncontrollable urinary incontinence. In other words, a woman with fistula constantly urinates on herself without control, suffering embarrassment and most often social rejection. Although fistula has been nearly eliminated in the U.S. and Europe since the early 20th century, it is still prevalent in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa with over one million women suffering from fistula worldwide according to Fistula Foundation.

Dissenters of the BYP100 protest have also argued that the slave women may have wanted Sims’ help and might have given consent.

Mack countered, “Without the institution of slavery, it would have been prohibitively difficult for Sims to find women willing to undergo these painful, experimental surgeries to which Anarcha, Betsey and Lucy had no choice but to assent. Ethically performing experimental surgeries requires un-coerced consent from well-informed patients who understand the risks involved.”

Americans need look no further than the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Tuskegee Study for an example of uninformed consent. The study involved 600 Black men with 399 of those men having syphilis. All participants were told they were being treated for “bad blood” but were instead studied for the prolonged effects of syphilis in the absence of proper treatment. The study lasted for 40 years. The women Sims’ treated were in an arguably worse predicament as they were considered property and therefore their owners considered gifting them to medical experimentation something akin to having their wagons fitted with new wagon wheels; it was more about protecting an investment than genuinely caring about these women’s health or dignity.

“Anarcha, Betsey and Lucy were enslaved women. Their ability to give un-coerced consent was stripped from by an institution that literally dehumanized them,” Mack continued. “For us to wonder, nearly 200 years later, whether these women may have consented to these procedures indicates a misunderstanding of both slavery and consent. Sims ‘purchased’ or ‘rented’ them from their owners for the purpose of medical experimentation in his backyard; this is an inherently coercive process.”

American medical education, research and industry has had a recurring theme of using, abusing and exploiting Black bodies in the name of medical advancement under the allowances of White supremacy. Among countless instances nationally, a couple of notable examples are the Medical College of Georgia’s grave robbing antics and the story of Henrietta Lacks. Racial disparities in healthcare and medical treatment persist today.

Until recently, African-Americans were the least likely (35% less likely) to receive a kidney from a living donor although they represent a third of the nearly 100,000 in need of a transplant. (Policy changes have improved these rates but Blacks still have a hard time getting on the donor list in the first place.) Despite advances in treatment and information available regarding prevention, HIV/AIDS is still disproportionately killing African-Americans at levels comparable to deaths in the early days of the disease. Medical professionals, to this day, still believe that Black people are somehow more pain tolerant. And to bring this Sims statue protest full circle, Black women are three times more likely to die in childbirth than White women.

“It’s a prime example of the ways Black women are underserved by our healthcare systems,” said Mack. “Incidentally, one of the reasons J. Marion Sims found so many Black slaves with vesicovaginal fistula is because they were more common in Black slave women due to poor nutrition and increased number of traumatic births. It's so disturbing to note the parallels to our current situation. The way the medical establishment repeatedly fails Black people, and particularly Black women, is heartbreaking.”

What are your thoughts on the protests and the history of how healthcare has affected Black people?

Showering With A Hair Net

by Mary Wolff

While a shower cap offers full coverage from water when taking a quick shower, hair nets are a different story. Made with mesh like material and leaving hair more exposed than a full shower cap, a net is definitely not the same principle as a cap. While showering with a hair net has certain benefits, there are also some drawbacks you need to know.

One of the biggest benefits of showering with a hair net is that it can help keep your curl pattern in place. Many naturals, especially those with thicker hair, find that showering leaves their hair without definition and without volume. Taking a shower with a hair net can help prevent this altogether, but not entirely. It’s also great for when you want your hair to get a little moisture and heat from the steam of the shower, but don’t want to wash your hair that day. A shower cap doesn’t let anything penetrate whereas the net allows for these elements to get to your hair. Many naturals also report that showering with a hair net helps to cut down on frizz and moisture loss. Hair nets aren’t just for days when you don’t want to wash hair though. Many naturals use hair nets and wash at the same time. While this may seem complicated or unnecessary, it allows for you to cleanse your hair while the net helps to hold hair shape and curl pattern.

The drawbacks of using a net in the shower depend on your definition of a drawback. If you are looking to condition and detangle in the shower, a hair net won’t work for that purpose and will need to be removed which would defeat the purpose of washing your hair while wearing one. It should also be noted that while wearing a hair net will work wonders for type 4 hair with tighter curls and even certain type 3 hair, it’s much harder for type 2 or loose waves. It will essentially flatten waves since the curl pattern isn’t as tightly formed as denser curls. The hair net can also make the water accumulation heavier which is an enemy of lightweight hair such as waves.

So, whether or not to use a net really depends on your hair type, what you plan on doing to your hair in the shower, etc. Of course, like all things in natural hair, you can always try it out for yourself and see what kind of results you get!

What do you prefer to wear over your head while showering?

Kaepernick's Frat Brothers Band Together To Protest In Front of NFL Headquarters

The NFL may have left Colin Kaepernick behind for taking a stance against police brutality, but his frat brothers got his back!

A huge group of Kappa Alpha Psi gathered together to support Kaepernick during the United We Stand Rally in front of NFL headquarters. Kaepernick was a 2010 initiate of the fraternity, established in 1911.

Kaepernick underwent extreme criticism for taking a knee during the national anthem in protest against the oppression of people of color, which hit a climax after the slew of killings by police, many of which went unpunished. Not only has he received criticism from the general public, but his career has suffered as well, as he has still not been signed by any NFL team.

“I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul!” shouted the brothers at the rally, located in New York.

The Kappas sent an official letter on behalf of the fraternity to the NFL commissioner stating, “Mr. Kaepernick status as a social pariah within League circles emanated from doing nothing more than kneeling “silently” during the National Anthem. Although politically unpopular within certain groups and not bold enough among other groups – including members of our Fraternity on both sides of the issue – Mr. Kaepernicks’s decision to take a stand arose out of the seemingly endless series of incidents that far too often finds young, unarmed black and brown males like, like him, dead or mortally wounded after law enforcement encounters. Fer people of goodwill and reason would argue against the notion that enough is enough.”

Along with the physical support, his other fellow frat brothers showed up in spirit:

What do you think about this protest? Are you boycotting the NFL or will you be tuning in this year?
