Moisture to the Max! 3 Routines for Seriously Hydrated Hair.

by Tiffani Greenaway of MyMommyVents.com

As the seasons change, so does our hair. Drier air and bitter winds can wreak havoc on our fragile strands, leaving curls dull, limp, and dry.

You've tried gels, conditioners, and almost everything on the beauty supply shelves, but nothing seems to work. Three different methods promise shinier, bouncier, moisture rich hair--but which is right for you?

Continue!>>>

Best for type 4 hair, many naturals try the L.O.C. Method, which promises days of moisturized curls. Liquid, oil, and cream are applied in order to drench dry strands. The oil and cream create a layer that locks in water and keeps it from being evaporated. After washing, apply a water based leave in conditioner. Next, add a hydrating oil like jojoba, olive, or coconut. Finish up with a moisture rich cream, and you'll have shiny, succulent curls.

The Curly Girl or "No Poo" Method was developed by Lorraine Massey and Deborah Chiel in Curly Girl: The Handbook. By cutting out shampoo, the Curly Girl Method brings healthy, supple curls. Eliminating shampoo cuts the amount of cones (silicones) and sulfates in your hair, leaving it healthier and with less buildup. Co-wash with a dime sized amount of conditioner, rinse, detangle, and blot dry. Scrunch gel from the ends of hair towards the scalp, and air dry or use a diffuser. Use a clarifying shampoo once a month to remove excess buildup.

The Max Hydration Method is the most intense, with a day and night regimen. The 5 step system is ideal for low porosity and 4C hair, and is great for helping to define curls. For seven days (and nights!), you'll infuse moisture into your strands so that it never gets dry or crunchy. Clarify with a mix of baking soda and water or an apple cider vinegar rinse. Co-wash, finger detangle, and deep condition or steam, apply a clay rinse and let it sit for 15 minutes, then apply leave in conditioner, and seal with gel. By day 7, your curls will be lustrous and defined.

Which method have you tried?

As long as we've known her, Issa Rae has always shared her struggles and insecurities on the big screen. It's one of the things that makes her most relatable. Her show 'Insecure' was recently renewed for a second season on HBO. It's a sign that good content highlighting Black women and Black culture in general is necessary.

And while we've seen a lot of insecurity from Issa Rae on her new television show, Issa gets even more personal in a recent interview with Essence Live. She shares her natural hair journey and how at the age of twelve she lost a lot of her hair.

Watch the clip below. What hair struggles have you experienced before making the transition?

Have you seen Taraji, queen of nighttime drama, diva of #EMPIRE, sharing her gorgeous body on Instagram? No?  Well do NOT feel bad because I'm gonna clue you in. She's showing out beautifully and sharing that the body of a 46 year old is lovely, taut and fab in all the right places!

All I can say is YAAAASSSSS! #blackgirlmagic is alive and well and while no magic was used for this body, Taraji makes it clear it took nothing but good old fashioned work to get it. It seems the whole world is either wearing or promoting Waist Trainers or Flat Tummy Tea so she's making it perfectly clear she's on the healthy pathway to her gorgeous body.

It's no secret that Hollywood requires all of its stars to stay beautiful, so we see why she works so hard. What I love even more is that she's showing all of Hollywood how amazing she looks, so can a Sista (and others like her) get more roles and equal pay? Just thinking out loud and saying "You looking good Taraji"!

Makes me wanna work out! Who's with me?

It's over, y'all. Or maybe, it's just the beginning.

We came out to make our voices heard. We made our choices, took our "I voted" selfies, and hoped for the best.

This year's election results were historic--maybe not in the way we thought, but still history making. While Hillary wasn't declared America's first female president, women were still shattering glass ceilings across the country.

Oregon elected Kate Brown, making her the first openly LGBT governor in the Unites States. Minnesota elected its first Somalian-American Muslim female legislator, Ilhan Omar. In Florida, Stephanie Murphy became the first Vietnamese-American woman elected to Congress, and in Washington, Pramila Jayapal became the first Indian-American woman elected to the House of Representatives.

In California, Kamala Harris represented for Jamaicans and Indians as the second African-American woman ever elected to the Senate and the first for the state. Catherine Cortez Masto was elected in Nevada, making her the first Latina senator, and in Illinois, Tammy Duckworth became the first female senator to have experienced combat. The Iraq War veteran lost both legs in 2004 from injuries she sustained after a helicopter she was landing was struck by a grenade.

These women and many more made history in this election year. They became the firsts, the starters, the trailblazers who are lighting the way for the rest of us and the little girls to come. Their backgrounds and experiences will help to propel us all.

Girl power!

A College Student's "White People Stay Colonizing" Presentation Just Went Viral

Written by Mike Orie of TheConsciousTip.com

In less than 24 hours, a college student's presentation "White People Stay Colonizing" has gone viral and it's sparking a lot of controversy.

When Taylor Amari Little posted a photo of her class presentation, she had no idea it would garner this much attention. The current Criminology and Criminal Justice major at Eastern Michigan University posted a photo with the caption "One day I feel like my professors just gon stop letting me do presentations." It was enough to get people talking instantly. After amassing over 4,000 shares on Facebook, Little would shortly after release the video of her class presentation.

Shortly after releasing the clip on YouTube, it was clear that Taylor Amari Little caused lots of controversy, making some either extremely uncomfortable or completely in agreement. Some popular comments included the following:

YouTube Profile Matt Gutro Says:So let me get this straight, black people murder the English language, that whites invented, and then a white person ironically says "that sh*t was fire" it is somehow negatively affecting blacks?

Youtube Profile SLJ Music Says:It's weird how racists purposely watch things that make them feel threatened, and then react thusly. Why are y'all even here. Tay this is just as dope as the pic that broke the internet. Keep going lil sis.
Little highlights the popular term known as Columbussing, which commonly refers to White people (or those of European descent) stealing and appropriating minority culture and redefining it, claiming it as their own. And although it's a tough conversation to have, it's something that has to be done.
Watch the video below.

What are your thoughts? Did Little go too far or is this a real conversation that still needs to be discussed in 2016?

Rejuvenate Your Natural Hair and Scalp with THIS Ingredient!

by Sabrina Perkins of SeriouslyNatural.org

Coffee is what gets me going in the morning but this amazing beverage should not just be limited to your morning Joe. Yes, coffee has excellent benefits for your skin and hair and since almost everyone has some in their home, it is easily accessible and ideal for DIY recipes. From hair rinses to scalp exfoliates, coffee is the gem you never realized you had or needed for healthy hair.

Continue!>>>

Grown in around eighty countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and south and Central America, coffee comes from the coffee tree which is a tropical evergreen shrub and the two most commercially important species grown are the Coffea Arabica and Coffea canephora. Coffee has numerous benefits from helping with depression to liver disease, coffee has antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and anti-cellulite properties which are all ideal for perfecting skincare.

Coffee also has caffeine, a white crystalline powder that is a naturally occurring stimulant, and is excellent for penetrating the hair follicles and stimulating them. Caffeine can also add a natural sheen to hair but many use it to help in slowing down hair loss while speeding up hair growth with hair follicle stimulation.

Rejuvenate Your Hair & Scalp With Coffee

Coffee can be used as a scalp exfoliate, a hair scrub and a hair rinse with each helping by stimulating hair growth. The exfoliate properties help to remove dead skin cells, dirt, dandruff, oil and even product build-up which can clog your scalp’s pores. Here are some DIY recipes for all three that will change your hair and coffee game drastically for the better.

Condish + Coffee Scalp Scrub
Simply add some coffee grounds to your favorite deep conditioner to the point of feeling the grounds and mix. Apply the mixture to the scalp using circular motions while leaving on scalp for five to ten minutes. Rinse off and wash hair with shampoo before styling as usual.

Coffee Scalp Scrub
4 tbsp. of favorite carrier oil (coconut or olive preferred)
6 tbsp. very fine coffee grounds (previously brewed is fine)
A few drops of tea tree oil

Mix all the ingredients well and store in an airtight container at room temperature or store in fridge. Scoop out enough to apply to scalp and massage for five to ten minutes before rinsing well and washing hair with shampoo. This is an excellent recipe for a face scrub too.

Coffee Hair Scrub
2 tsp. of coffee grounds
2 tsp. raw honey
2 tsp. of olive oil

This DIY recipe is great for reviving dry, dull hair. Mix all three ingredients well and apply to strands and scalp. Make sure all strands are covered and massage into scalp in circular motion for a few minutes. Rinse well and shampoo before styling as usual.

Simple Coffee Hair Rinse
Simply brew some strong coffee and allow to cool. Shampoo hair as usual and take the cool coffee and pour over your head. You can use a big bowl under your head to capture the excess and re dump over your head again for added coverage. Place hair in shower cap and let sit for up to an hour. Rinse out with warm water and allow to air dry or style as usual. This will help darken hair (may not be ideal for lighter-colored women), add shine and help strengthen your strands.

If you just want the exfoliating effects of coffee for regular cleansing and conditioning, simply add some grounds to your shampoo or deep conditioner bottles to boost your products ability to exfoliate and aid in hair growth. I know I talk about coffee A LOT, but it needs to be a regular in your beauty regimen because it's so simple to use, inexpensive and has a host of amazing benefits.

It adds six months of shelf life to your product, is free of parabens and other nasty chemicals.

Qhemet Biologics
You can purchase this line in select Sephoras or their website. Do not purchase this brand from Amazon, they have stated on their website that products found on there are not from authorized retailers. What I love about this brand is how they provide information about all of the ingredients that they use and why they use each ingredient. Their Alma & Olive Oil Heavy Cream has been recommended as the best moisturizer by Essence.com and Vegetarian Times Magazine.

Kinky Curly
You can find Kinky Curly in Wholefoods, Target, Walmart and Amazon. Their products are free of mineral oil, parabens, alcohols, acrylics, petroleum, silicone, waxes and are free of plastic. I am quite partial to the Wonder Curl Get Set Jelly! Awesome stuff that works on all natural hair types. The brand uses two of my favorite ingredients Aloe and Shea Butter. No chemicals in these products with only curl friendly ingredients. You can purchase from WonderCurl.com, Amazon or authorized retail partners.

Mielle Organics
This line contains certified organic ingredients, with some very interesting products to give a try like: The Babassu Oil Mint Deep Conditioner or their Avocado Moisturizing Hair Milk. Mielle Organics is in Target, Sally’s, their website or Amazon.com.

BelNouvo
Organic handcrafted hair care founded upon family love. The creation of these are products has an interesting back story. The CEO, Arcman Durosier developed this line after seeing a lack of quality products when his sister made the transition to natural hair. The products sound absolutely yummy! Red Velvet Moisture Butter or Blackberry Sage and Mint; simply divine. Purchase from their website.

by Naomi from LAMBB

You might not appreciate being compared to a plant, but let me tell you why it is the most beautiful and accurate comparison. Natural hair is a lot like a plant, the more you water it the better it will grow. Not to mention our hair journeys typically start out a lot like a seed- small but bursting with potential. Also just like a plant needs sun and nutrients, our hair needs satin scarves and oils. So allow me to share with you my 5 Top Tips to growing Long, Thick and Healthy Natural Hair, so you can blossom into the beautiful plant you are.

Use No heat– I know shrinkage can be an enemy of progress but blowing drying your hair every time you wash it leaves it more prone to heat damage. Besides there are plenty of ways you can stretch your hair without using heat, check out a method I use here!

Keep your hair Moisturized– Natural hair is naturally dry, so it is important to constantly add moisture to your hair, especially the ends as these are the oldest parts of your hair. Develop a regimen that may consist of moisturizing your hair every night, or day. If you are not sure how well your hair retains moisture, give the Porosity Test a try.

Deep Condition– it is crucial to deep condition your hair every time you wash it. Deep conditioning makes your hair more soft and manageable after you wash, whilst also imparting moisture.

Drink Water– nobody really likes being told what they should and shouldn’t eat, however your diet is important when it comes to hair growth. Do aim to drink about 2 litres of water a day, but if water is not your thing try throwing in a lemon!

Protective Styles– During these colder months I very rarely leave my natural hair out, this is because of the damage the drying winds could potentially do to my hair. Instead I braid my hair down and throw on a wig!

On Nov 10-12, tiphub Africa hosted its second annual Diaspora Demo Summit at various locations across Washington, DC. According to a press release sent over, tiphub Africa's Diaspora Demo Day, "Aimed at highlighted the best in innovation and social impact across the African Diaspora the event rallied 12 promising startups from 8 different countries for a startup showcase. Each of the startups participated in an 8-week accelerator designed to offer  mentorship, guidance, expertise  and advisory support as well as an in-person residency in Washington, DC at I/O Spaces. The accelerator was conducted in affiliation with sponsors and partners including South African Airways, AppsTech, Morgan Lewis, Sendgrid, FB Start, Amazon AWS, Stripe Atlas, and Afrinection."

The second annual event hosted workshops on topics ranging from “Advancing Innovation in Products, Processes, and Business Models for Startups in Developing Markets” to “Social Impact at Scale” to a diverse audience of founders, aspiring entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders and agency affiliates.
Since the closing of Diaspora Demo less than two weeks ago, 7 of the 12 featured companies have received investment inquires as a result of their pitches. Many of these same companies have also seen individual success including ScholarX, a platform to help students locate scholarships , who received funding from LDI Africa, Dechets a l'Or, a Guinea-based recycling startup, who won 10,000 in the Wharton Africa Business Forum Venture Competition. DC-based streaming service KweliTV not only won the #SheDemos pitch competition but a full year of office space from sponsor and community partner  I/O Spaces. 5 of the participating Diaspora Demo companies will also be  selected to go on an innovation and investor tour of Silicon Valley.
A 2015 report highlighted that Blacks and Latinos only make up approximately 4 to 5% of the tech workforce, with HP employing the most Blacks, equaling to about 15% of the time the study was conducted. The study comprised the top 235 major VC firms, aggregating data education and gender of the Black investors through LinkedIn. It is because of this, organizations such as Tiphub Africa are necessary for increasing the diversity of African/African Americans represented in the VC industry.
With the expansion of the Diaspora Demo Summit Tiphub Africa, the investment manager for startups in Africa and the African Diaspora, continues its commitment to supporting the next wave of African and African Diaspora focused startups. Post Demo Day tiphub plans to continue its empowerment of entrepreneurs both domestically and abroad with initiatives like the NewWave Code-a-thon partnership and recurring bi-monthly founders forums. This just might be the #BlackestWeddingEver.

This past weekend in New Orleans, Tony Oluwatoyin Lawson, founder of Shoppe Black and Curator Shantrelle P. Lewis jumped the broom at the Ace Hotel in New Orleans.

Lawson and Lewis wanted their wedding to combine their Nigerian and New Orleans roots respectfully, and created the theme #JollofandJambalaya. And while it's the theme that stands out certainly, it's the Second Line after the wedding that's got people talking.

Second lines are a New Orleans brass band filled parade tradition. The "main line" is the main section of the parade, while the "second line" is for those who immediately follow, often dancing simultaneously.

To top it off, 80% of the vendors from the wedding were Black-owned. Watch the video below.

Fences is set to premiere in theaters December 25th on Christmas. The original stage play first premiered on Broadway in 1987, earning August Wilson a Tony Award as well as his first Pulitzer Prize. August Wilson passed away in 2005 due to liver cancer.

Did you watch last night? Did you hurt your knees jumping with Dru Hill too?

Last night's awards show brought together the classic elements Soul Train has always been known for--love, peace, and soooooul!

90's babies got their entire life when Dru Hill took the stage. Sisqo, Nokio, and Tao kicked off the star studded show with "Tell Me" and were later joined by Jazz for "Beauty is Her Name."

The blast from the R&B past kept going with a performance from Carl Thomas. Host and executive producer Erykah Badu took viewers on a musical journey, DJ'ing a soul cypher with Ne-Yo, Angie Stone, Tyrese, and soul legend Gladys Knight, while jazz pianist Robert Glasper played the keys in the background.

In an inspiring display of sisterhood and black girl magic, Jill Scott presented Brandy with the 2nd annual Lady of Soul Award. Proclaiming her love for the soulful singer, Jill led the crowd in a few bars of Brandy's "I Wanna Be Down," while the newest Lady of Soul performed some of her best known hits, including Almost Doesn't Count,""What About Us,""Full Moon," and was joined by Ma$e for "Sitting on Top of the World."

Legend Award honoree Teddy Riley closed out the show and took us back in time to the start of the New Jack Swing era, performing a medley of songs"My Prerogative,""Remember the Time" and "Rump Shaker," joined by guest artists Doug E. Fresh, Bobby Brown, Tito Jackson, Wreckx-N-Effect and Guy.

BET also shared a music video from the upcoming New Edition movie. The three night biopic will air starting January 24th, tying in with the release of Bell Biv DeVoe's new album, "Three Stripes," which drops at midnight on January 27, 2017.

Black millennials don't date anymore. That's the theory we hear all the time, and while it holds some merit, it's not the case for all of us. It's one of the things I thoroughly enjoy about watching 'Insecure.' I've consistently tuned in every week, partially because it's a dope show, and partially because I get excited every time I see people who look like me doing television right.

If you've never seen the show before, (sorry for the spoiler, but you're hella late at this point) here's a quick run down. "Insecure" takes place in a predominately Black neighborhood of LA. Issa Rae and Jay Ellis play a couple who's trying to overcome a complacent 5-year relationship and financial setbacks. Jay Ellis (Lawrence) is trying to get his life/career together, but has a series of bad luck until towards the end of the first season. Issa works for a community non-profit where she serves as the only Black voice, often dealing with passive aggressiveness and micro-agression. For most of the season, she's the bread winner of the relationship. She spends a lot of time with her friends, but has neglected her relationship. Molly is Issa's best friend. Molly has guy problems. Molly doesn't like the guys who just might be perfect for her, but never gets the guys who she thinks is perfect for her. Issa cheats on Lawrence. Everything gets crazy. Okay, I think you're all caught up.

So about last night. I went into the episode knowing that Issa messed up. Knowing that Lawrence (Jay Ellis) was suffering traumatically from nice-guy syndrome. Pause. What is nice-guy syndrome? Nice-guy syndrome is when nice guys like Lawrence get overlooked by women because they don't truly realize their potential in both dating and career worth. It causes them a lack of true understanding of their worth, often times not yielding the results they deserve.

Okay, back to the story. Life was starting to take a turn for the better for Lawrence's career, but everything else was a cluster-f*ck. I was hoping that Molly and Issa would mend their friendship woes, and they did. But specifically from my perspective, I waited patiently 120 hours to see how Lawrence would follow-up to learning about Daniel.

Guys like Lawrence are historically, genuinely good guys who finish last. Lawrence's are usually the third round pick in the after school kickball game. The guy who girls are interested in, but never have enough edge. The guy with so much potential, that once he realizes it, becomes unstoppable. They're usually the guys (despite minor flaws) women don't fully appreciate until they're gone. Most of us know it as the guy who gets placed in the "friend zone."

Last night though Lawrence overcame nice guy syndrome. He no longer held the "I want you, but I want you to want me too mindset." There was a big transition towards the beginning of the episode where I think Lawrence realized his worth. It was the conversation with his homeboy that caused him to do something unexpected. The strip club. Actually going out with his homies. Things nice-guys often lose sight of in the midst of relationship chaos and infatuation. But Lawrence went from third-string pick on the neighborhood kickball team to head coach. All in one episode.

As we're watching this transition of new Lawrence, Issa is having a melt-down while trying to celebrate her friends b-day. We find her consistently worrying about Lawrence. Checking her phone multiple times, thinking about him constantly. In my honest opinion, I think she deserved everything she had coming. In Game 7 (metaphorically speaking) she picked Daniel to start the game and benched Lawrence. And while it might've felt like a home run at the moment, the outcome wasn't enough to sustain itself through the remainder of the season. I think Issa deserved everything except being led to believe that everything was okay and that Lawrence genuinely wanted to talk. That was pretty foul.

But if I'm being honest, what came next was probably the most unexpected scene and probably my favorite.

The shot of the Best Buy shirt dangling in the closest. It hung abandoned like their 5-year relationship. The shirt held so much symbolism. In this moment we saw the irony of potential. The idea of what something could become with just two to three additional ingredients. But Issa's lack of foresight may have caused her to stir the pot a little too much. Not tasting what could've been with just a little extra Lawry's and motivation.

This story happens pretty often though. For some reason we never appreciate what's in front of us until it's gone. It's this mindset that the grass is always greener on the other side. But what if we instead watered our own grass a little more instead of worrying about our neighbors? (I know...I'm pretty tired of all my bad analogies at this point too.)

I'm not sure what they've got in store for Season 2, but I think I'm hoping that the two of them work it out. And while I'm not expecting some fairy-tale ending, I genuinely think Black millennials need this particular story. There's a lot of room for growth here. Issa gets promoted at "We Got Y'all" and Lawrence finally launches his app. And then they get back together. Or...Lawrence's life continues to get better and Issa's takes a turn for the worse. There's so many ways this story can go, but I guess we'll just have to wait and find out.

Which character do you relate to most? Molly or Issa? What are your predictions for Season 2?

Tanzanian-born Godwin Gabriel has created new ride sharing app, Moovn. Similar to other ride-sharing apps, Moovn works very similar, but aims to be both more affordable and notes safety as one of its top priorities.

Moovn is currently available in 8 U.S. cities, one city in Canada and three cities in Africa. Among these cities include New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Portland, Vancouver, Washington D.C. and Johannesburg, South Africa. The app sets itself apart from both Uber and Lyft because it allows users to schedule a ride up to a month in advance via the app. It also allows for selection of different vehicle types such as motorcycles based on the market.

Gabriel, who holds an MBA from University of Washington's Foster School of Business has a vision to make Moovn' the Amazon of Africa. "I believe technology consumption in Africa is growing rapidly year over year and therefore presents us with tons of growth opportunities to continue our expansion and operations within that continent," he said in an interview with Urban Geekz. "All-in-all, there are so many business models that can be built upon this platform but our grand vision is to become the Amazon of Africa."

What are your thoughts on this new ride sharing app? Are you willing to give it a try?
